Power outages trimmed but continue Wednesday around Carson City, surrounding counties

Power outages from the New Year's weekend atmospheric river winter storm have been significantly reduced but there are a few thousand who remain without electricity in Carson City and surrounding northern Nevada counties.
As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, there are 604 NV Energy customers in Carson City without power, 161 customers in Douglas County, 100 customers in Lyon County and 3,862 customers in Washoe County. In Storey County, one customer was without power.
Statewide, 4,783 customers were without power as of 9 a.m., mostly in the northern Nevada region. At one time during the storm, anywhere from 69,000 to more than 70,000 customers were without power throughout northern Nevada,, according to NV Energy.
Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect Wednesday for Carson City and surrounding counties, and a Winter Storm Warning is underway for Lake Tahoe and Sierra, according to the National Weather Service.
Wet snow is expected Wednesday with total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches on the valley floors with 3 to 6 inches above 5,000 feet. Impact areas include the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley areas and northern Washoe County, according to the weather service. The advisory is until 4 p.m. Wednesday.
At Lake Tahoe, heavy snow expected Wednesday with accumulations of 8 to 14 inches, except 1 to 2 feet above 7,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service. Localized amounts up to 3 feet are expected for the Sierra crest. Winds gusting as high as 100 mph over Sierra ridgelines with gusts up to 40 mph in the Tahoe Basin. Motorists should be prepared for delays as deteriorating road conditions are expected.
Even light snowfall causes major travel delays, especially during periods of high traffic volume, the weather service advises. Allow extra time to reach your destination and leave extra space between vehicles since it takes longer to stop on slick roadways. Elsewhere, some warming centers and shelters in have closed, but may reopen again if conditions warrant.
The warming shelter in Dayton at the Dayton Senior Center located at 320 Old Dayton Valley Road closed at 5 p.m. Tuesday after NV Energy restored power to the majority of Dayton and Mound House residents and businesses. Lyon County will continue to monitor power outages.
Douglas County has closed the warming centers at Douglas County Community & Senior Center and the East Fork Fire Protection District Station 4. The county will reopen the centers if they are needed.
Douglas County would like to remind the public that officials are actively monitoring the current winter storms and weather patterns, and will respond based on community needs.
The warming center at Harveys Lake Tahoe, 18 Hwy 50, Stateline, will remain open.
