Carson City area weather: Some snow overnight into Wednesday, larger storm by weekend
The first week of 2024 will bring snow at Lake Tahoe and snow showers down to Carson City by midweek with another and bigger storm by the weekend, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
The first weather system will move into the region Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing 2 to 8 inches at lake level and up to 10 inches above 7,000 feet forecasters said. Winds gusting as high as 80 mph along the Sierra crest and up to 30 mph in the Basin.
A winter weather advisory for Lake Tahoe and Sierra is from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 1 a.m., Thursday.
The buildup of snow is expected to bring hazardous conditions on roadways during morning and evening commutes Tuesday one Wednesday, especially over mountain passes. Motorists should plan for delays. For the latest road conditions, call 511 or go to NVroads.com.
For Carson City and surrounding counties, the first storm is likely to bring a slight chance of rain, snow showers and patchy freezing fog today extending overnight, with snow likely on Wednesday. Not much in the way of snow accumulation, forecasters say.. Highs Tuesday in Carson City will be in the mid 40s, Wednesday the low 40s, with mostly sunny skies Thursday with highs in the low 40s.
Weekend Storm
Models indicated the storm slated for this weekend will likely be a colder, stronger storm. It will begin to set up Friday night, and will extend into Sunday, according to forecasters in its latest discussion forecast discussion. The high Sierra has a 50-70 percent chance for 18-plus inches of snow with a 40 percent chance for a foot into the Tahoe Basin. For Carson City and surrounding counties, spillover from the mountains into the region is anticipated, with anywhere from 1 to 4 inches of snow possible.
