The wondrous pine tree explored at Nevada State Museum's Family Fun Saturday
Discover the wonderful world of pine trees this Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.
Pines are evergreen conifer trees that produce cones and are dressed in green needles instead of leaves. Both of Nevada's state trees are conifers: the ancient Bristlecone and Pinyon Pine.
Saturday's event examines these trees from top to bottom and also explores the pinecone as a food source. Learn how Native American tribes processed and used pine nuts to eat and which animals enjoy eating them, too.
Participants can make a pine needle angel keepsake or pinecone holiday tree craft to take home with them. There are no materials fees. All ages are welcome. Cost is $10 for adults and free for museum members. Ages 17 and under are always free.
The Nevada State Museum is located at 600 N. Carson Street in Carson City. It's open Tuesday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
