'Cats the Musical' Young Actor's Edition hits Carson City stage with weekend runs at BAC
Beginning its production run Friday, Dec. 1 in Carson City, "Cats the Musical Young Actor's Edition" is a "meow-tastic," one-hour adaptation of one of Broadway's longest-running hits, brought to life by the creative genius of Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is specifically designed to enchant young audiences and their families.
This purr-fectly delightful show offers a delightful escape from reality, inviting everyone to step into the whimsical world of cats, where they can express their emotions through amazing costumes, makeup, enchanting songs and captivating dances. Andrew Lloyd Webber's magnificent musical score includes the iconic and heartwarming song "Memory."
Don't miss the opportunity to be a part of this enchanting feline fantasy. Performances are Friday, Dec. 1 and Dec. 8 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 3 and Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall in Carson City.
In WHCT’s production, more than 80 of Northern Nevada’s most talented young actors (ages 7-19) inhabit the world of CATS. The stage transforms into an oversized junkyard playground (including a real car) lived in by an array of enchanting felines, each with their own unique charm.
From the sassy Rum Tum Tugger to the mysterious Macavity, the magical Mr. Mistoffelees to the lovable Jennyanydots, and the steadfast Skimbleshanks to the poignant Grizabella, you'll meet a host of unforgettable characters. These Jellicle Cats come out to play on a special night known as the Jellicle Ball. They take turns sharing their tales with Old Deuteronomy, their wise and kind-hearted leader, who faces the challenging decision of selecting one lucky Cat to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and begin a brand-new Jellicle life.
"This production marks a new level of intensity and ambition for our youth division. Watching these exceptionally talented kids grow, thrive, and tackle a show that revolves entirely around song and dance is incredibly inspiring," said Director Carol Scott.
"It's an incredibly demanding musical for our young actors," Scott emphasized, "with the entire cast almost constantly on stage, continuously in motion. Despite their academic commitments during the day, these young performers devote their evenings to mastering dance routines and vocals, delivering performances at an exceptionally high standard."
She further elaborated, "The intricacy and allure of the show are enhanced by the individualized wigs, costumes, and makeup for each character. Among the lessons the cast and crew have taken away from this production is about embracing the present moment, reflecting the way actual cats embrace their lives.”
