Night Off the Streets program hosts Carson City volunteer training
Training sessions for volunteers will be conducted by Night Off the Streets (NOTS) warming center on Oct. 20 and Oct. 22 at the First United Methodist Church in Carson City.
For the sixth year, NOTS will provide a place for those without homes to sleep during the winter nights from November 1 through March 31. A different church in Carson City hosts the warming shelter each month. All community members are welcome to serve as volunteers.
The training sessions cover the roles of volunteers on each of the three shifts during the night. The training sessions will be held on October 20, 6:30-7:30 pm, and October 22, 10-11 am. Volunteers need to attend just one of the two sessions.
“We have been blessed with dedicated volunteers who are the core of Night Off the Streets,” says NOTS founder and president Deacon Craig Lagier of Carson City. “It takes 200 volunteers to operate the warming shelter during the winter season."
The training sessions are designed for new and veteran volunteers. For those considering to serve as a volunteer, the sessions provide an opportunity to learn more about NOTS as well. Prior to the volunteer training sessions, optional Narcan/naloxone training will also be conducted at 6 pm on October 20 and 9:30 am on October 22.
The NOTS warming center was founded more than six years ago after a homeless man died of hypothermia while sleeping outdoors in Carson City. Since opening the center, no one has died from exposure to the cold in Carson City.
For more information about the training sessions, contact NOTS at notscarson@outlook.com or call 775-600-2632. Pre-registration is not required to attend the training sessions, but is encouraged. The Carson City Methodist Church, the site of the training, is located at 212 N. Division St.
