University Women’s Club to host Holocaust speaker Judy Schumer in Gardnerville
The University Women’s Club will host guest speaker, Judy Schumer, on Saturday, Oct. 14, 1:30 p.m., at the Douglas County Community Senior Center, 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville.
The program topic is “Righteous Among the Nations: The Rescuers – Non-Jews Who Risked Their Lives During the Holocaust.”
Judy Schumer was born in Shanghai, China, to parents who survived the Holocaust by first escaping to Lithuania from Nazi-occupied Poland. This event is free and open to the public. Please contact Claire Koeper if you’re planning on attending. 408-313-5079.
At a time of rising anti-semitism 78 years after the end of World War II, this program will highlight acts of courage by several rescuers, including Sir. Nicholas Winton, who saved hundreds of children from Czechoslovakia, and Chione Sugihara, who provided Japanese visas to Lithuanian Jews.
The University Woman’s Club has been active in Carson Valley since 1928. Members gather locally each month (October through May) on Saturday afternoons for a social and informal meeting. Our membership is open to women who wish to support girls graduating from local high schools and going to schools of advanced learning in their field of interest. Come as a guest to learn more about us.
