Korean War Vet Kicked To Street
To the editor:
Sheriff's deputies will enforce a lock-down (forced eviction) on 84 year old decorated Korean War Veteran, Rick Ostler early Friday, June 27.
Although Ostler has his rent paid through July 31, the Terrace Apartment management, where Ostler lives on Fifth Street in Carson City, has filed criminal misdemeanor assault charges against Ostler. To counter the allegation, Ostler submitted to and passed a lie detector test, proving, he says, contrived charges by Terrace Apt. personnel.
Ostler, a member of the local Veteran's of Foreign Wars, is known there for his family contribution of nine brothers serving in both WWII and Korea. Ostler served in action with his twin brother, Lawrence until Lawrence was wounded on a patrol both were on. Both twins were decorated, honorably discharged, and subsequently each became police lieutenants in California cities. Of the ten Ostlers that served, the oldest brother, Charles, lost his life in combat in Italy.
Ostler has been fighting Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer since May of 2000 and currently is also treated for severe asthma and high blood pressure. He claims he has been given no time to find another home and at his advanced years, lack of nearby family support and wherewithal to accomplish the move in less than thirty days, he fears he may become homeless. So far, no social agencies have come to his aid.
