High Fives Foundation para-athletes to compete in Peter Stetina’s Paydirt race in Carson City

May 21, 2022 - 7:30am Peter Stetina’s Paydirt gravel bike race has become a staple in the High Fives Foundation event calendar. Since 2017, the event has raised over $63,000 for the non-profit which has gone to rehabilitation programs and now to build future para-cycling categories in the Paydirt race.
The 2022 Peter Stetina Paydirt will take place on May 21, 2022, in Carson City, Nev. The event consists of a combination of a timed 63.5-mile gravel bike race with a 4,700-foot elevation gain, a Canyon Bicycles happy hour in Fuji Park, a timed mechanical bull ride, and a tire-toss competition. This year, five High Fives Foundation athletes will compete in preparation for a full para-cycling category in future events.
“High Fives is an inspirational group of people based locally who support athletes just like you and me who have had an unfortunate accident and come out a bit worse for wear. This weekend exists thanks to them and it’s about coming together and supporting our tribe,” says Peter Stetina. “Riding bikes, I’m sure you’ve had a few close calls and can easily visualize yourself in their shoes. Peter Stetina first related to the High Fives Foundation in 2013 when his father suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car collision when riding his bike. He leaned on the Foundation when Peter himself suffered a leg injury that nearly ended his decorated bike riding career. Both these incidents showed him how unpredictable life can be and how important it is to have a supportive community. Peter has been a valued member of the High Fives Foundation Board of Trustees since 2019.

"The creation of an inclusive event for all provides the ability for growth for years to come as it enables a platform for all bike athletes to participate and enjoy the sport of competition."
The number of races hosting para categories continues to grow including Grinduro in Mt. Shasta, California; UNBOUND in Emporia, Kansas; Rooted Vermont in Richmond, Vermont; RPI in Ketchum, Idaho; SBT GRVL in Steamboat Springs, Colorado; The Leadville Trail Race and Leadville Trail 100 in Leadville, Colorado; Chequamegon events in Wisconsin; and The Last Best Ride in Montana.
