Carson City's FISH set to demolish Whistle Stop to make room for transitional housing complex
Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, is taking the next step in our Revitalization Program. FISH purchased the run-down Whistle Stop Inn on North Carson Street in Carson City two years ago. We are now ready to demolish the existing property to build new 3-story apartment towers and a commercial building.
Before demolition, FISH is offering the vacant buildings to our local Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department for a training opportunity. Both agencies will be honing their skills at 1421 North Carson Street on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 12-13 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The beautiful new buildings that will be erected will help revitalize the Carson City landscape, they will help to revitalize our workforce, and they will help revitalize families by directly impacting generational poverty.
The apartments will provide low-cost and no-cost transitional housing (similar to traditional college housing/scholarships) for families with the work experience, skills, and aptitude to successfully take on technical training classes, helping them move from “minimum wage to meaningful careers.”
We are providing training to our local labor force so they can fill higher-paying open positions in the area, i.e., the workforce will be revitalized!
This career training includes, but is not limited to: Healthcare, Construction Management, IT (Information Technology), Advanced Manufacturing, Journeymen Electrician, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), and CDL Truck Driving. Our program will provide education resulting in technical certifications and not 4-year degrees.
On Saturday, May 21, we will be holding our “Celebrity Waiter” fundraiser that will begin with a formal ground-breaking ceremony on the former Whistle Stop property (all the buildings will be gone). We invite the community to join us. Check out our website and Facebook for more details.
