Learn Dayton’s best kept historical secrets at the Dayton Museum
Do you want to know the historic town of Dayton’s best kept secrets? Dayton Museum opened for the season on March 4 at the town’s 1865 schoolhouse at 135 Shady Lane. The museum promotes the discovery of the culture, the tools used by the pioneers, their lifestyles and names of many who settled in Dayton 174 years ago.
Ask about the Genealogy research and names saved on our computers. The museum contains displays of Nevada’s earliest history, including:
The first gold discovery in Gold Canyon in today’s Dayton in 1849 by gold seekers traveling the California Trail on Pike and Main Streets, first quartz mills to process ore from Comstock mines, Chinatown, farms, ranching, Paiute and Washoe Indians, railroading, vintage photos, old Dayton High School, the Adolph Sutro story, furniture, a two-story outhouse, portable potty used by Lola Montez, and in later years, learn about the Making of the Misfits movie in old town with Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift. Remember to ring the 1863 school bell shipped to Dayton from Sheffield, England when the school opened.
The Museum is managed by volunteers, admission is free and is open on Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm and Sundays, 1 to 4 pm. Dayton history books are on sale too. Private tour appointments are available and donations are welcomed!
