Regional author Judie ‘Jay Crowley’ to speak at Carson City Leisure Hour Club
Carson City Leisure Hour Club members get an inside look at the thought processes of local author Jay Crowley at their monthly dinner meeting on Thursday, March 21 at the Plaza Event Center.
Jay Crowley is a long-time Nevadan with a passion for Nevada history and an amazing storytelling talent. The Jacks Valley resident and author notes that residents of the area probably know her better as Judie Fisher or Judie Crowley.
During her presentation, Ms. Crowley will share some of her experiences as a novice writer and the eventual use of the pen name. She will also talk about background stories from some of her books.
Crowley has plenty of stories to tell about growing up in the Silver State. She was raised by her grandmother and her mother was “a honkytonk piano player” at the Bucket of Blood Saloon for years.
Her books create a kind of Nevada mythos: tales of treasure, murder, and intrigue in the high desert. Lahontan City, for example, takes place in the ghost town of the real settlement that was built during construction of the Lahontan Dam. Treasure Stuck in Time has a modern plot that revolves around lost gold from an 1885 robbery near Carson City.
Her work has received numerous recognitions including her identification as an Emerging New Author 2020, which was received again in 2021. She has also written and published a number of novellas, along with several anthologies and magazine stories.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. The organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature. Its motto of "Let knowledge grow from more to more" comes from Tennyson’s poem In Memoriam.
Information for individuals interested in joining can be obtained by contacting the club at 775-302-8820 or email: lhcreservations@gmail.com. Dinner meeting reservations are required and must be made by 5 pm on Sunday, March 17.
