Last week, I wrote about the large snow drifts and huge snow fields that Elaine and I encountered on our hike toward Winnemucca Lake from the top of Kit Carson Pass on California S.R. 88.

Our purpose for the hike was three-fold: To walk on snow (which we did), to photograph some wildflowers (which we did) and to fish for Brook and Kamloop trout at Winnemucca Lake (which we did not, due to too much snow and too much wind).

This week, I am suggesting that you take the time to hike on that same Winnemucca Lake Trail to admire and photograph the wildflowers.

Here’s how to do so:

Taking a look at the new plans for the Carson City Center/Nugget Project, there are several new things that stick out.

First, the announcement that partnership with P3 Development has been terminated because they could not come to an agreement. It was revealed earlier this summer that the the project partners switched architects because they weren't happy with what they were getting from P3. But now it seems P3 is out of the picture entirely. Not only was P3 slated to build the project, but it was supposed to handle the financing.

This is a final reminder that applications for the 2011 Special Sage Grouse Hunt at Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) are now available on the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) website at ndow.org/hunt/apps/.
The Sheldon hunt will be open for two weekends Sept. 17-18 and Sept. 24-25. This is a permitted hunt, with 75 permits awarded by random draw available for each hunt by reservation only.
The hunt is open to both residents and nonresidents.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is offering a two-day moving water beginning spin fishing clinic on August 5, and 6.
The Friday evening session will take place at the Verdi Community Library and Wildlife Education Center from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
This session will cover rod and reel selection, casting, line selection, basic knots and rigging for lure, bait and fly fishing with spinning gear.

The National Night Out was started in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch, a national crime prevention organization. The goal was to give the United States a "night out against crime." Over 15,500 communities nationwide participate in the National Night Out program, with large-scale celebrations such as the one Carson City has every year, and smaller-scale ones involving demonstrations, block parties, and citizens being urged to leave their lights on against crime.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District Office is seeking the public’s assistance in investigating an act of recent vandalism in Brunswick Canyon south and east of Carson City.

 
A series of public meetings on the plan to transport water from rural Nevada to Las Vegas is expected to draw a diverse group of allies trying to stop the controversial project.

The Carson Nugget Development Advisory Committee will meet Aug. 8 for possible action to recommend a "simplified and restructured program plan" to the Carson City Board of Supervisors for the Carson City Center Project, AKA Nugget Project.

The new plan calls for the formation of a not-for-profit entity that would take over ownership of the project.

Following is the agenda item for the meeting:

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval had a teleconference with the Nevada press today from Kuwait, where he is staying in the midst of a week-long trip to the Middle East, including visits with Nevada troops at several bases in Iraq.
Sandoval left Monday with the governors of Kentucky, Tennessee and Utah on the trip, and he expects to return this weekend.
