Living in Northern Nevada over this past month, we’ve been the sad witnesses to how tragedy can affect the lives of so many. The horrible shooting at the Carson IHOP that left 4 dead and injured 7, followed by the fatal accident at the air races that took the lives of 11 people and injured more than 70, is a sad and real reminder of how short our time on this earth can be. Left behind are spouses, children, grandchildren and other friends. Along with the unexpected death of their loved one, often comes with a loss of income and other unexpected expenses.

A REFLECTION
by Tracy Davis and Cheryl Worthington

Twenty years ago, Carson City lost one of its finest. Pat Bates' death was a loss for the community, the state, and for those who were personally touched by her. And yet, because of the life she lived, Pat continues to live in the hearts of those who knew her, those who loved her.

There are many people who remember where they were and what they were doing when they found out that John Lennon had died. Others remember the death of JFK with similar sadness, the memory sharp and untouched after nearly 50 years.

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California, the Sierra and Southern Oregon. This report is through Oct. 12.

It’s that time of the year, once again, to visit a special place known as Apple Hill in the State of California.
If you are a newcomer to this area or if you have never been there, fall is a great time of the year to visit Apple Hill.
And, if you are a newcomer, about now you are probably wondering, “What and where in the heck is Apple Hill?”
Well, the correct answer is: “Apple Hill is not a specific hill or a specific location; on the contrary, it is a large geographic area.”

By the Nevada Department of Wildlife
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) urges chukar hunters to avoid popular chukar hunting areas recently damaged by extensive wildfire in northeastern Nevada.
Despite these fires, the department is still predicting excellent chukar hunting success this season.
Hunters are asked to stay away from China Garden in the Bloody Run Mountains, Tom Basin in the Santa Rosa Range, the northern portion of the Izzenhood Range south of Midas, the Hot Springs Range and the south Turscarora Range.

By the Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association
As pioneers made their way through the Shasta Cascade Mountain Range, there was a stream some had to cross.
While a couple of pioneers were crossing this stream, one of their hats had fallen off of their head and landed in the water.
Thus, Hat Creek was born, or so goes the old wives tale.
Hat Creek winds its way through the Lassen National Forest and is known as one of the most famous fly fishing streams in Northern California and offers some great spin fishing.

Steve Jobs, the visionary who created products from the Macintosh computer to the iPhone, died today. Without his genius, I'm not sure you would be reading this website today. I've used Apple computers for the last 25 years. I'm writing this on an Apple MacBook Pro, after hearing the news from an alert on my iPhone. The following is a video of his commencement address at Stanford University in 2005:
