The Lyon County sheriff’s office is investigating the shooting death of a juvenile in Dayton over the weekend.

The years of hard work and sleepless nights of studying are finally paying off for the hundreds of University of Nevada graduates who took the stage on Friday and Saturday and will now begin the next phase of their lives.

More than 1,600 bachelor degrees and more than 560 advanced-degree certificates were awarded for this spring commencement. University officials say, there were so many undergraduates this year, they had to split the ceremony into two parts.

A bill that would allow schools to obtain and administer auto-injectable epinephrine in the event of a student having a food allergy attack has cleared committee and is on its way to the General Assembly this week.

Western Nevada College advanced to the Western District baseball tournament championship round by splitting a pair of games on Friday in Sterling, Colo.

The Wildcats dropped into losers’ bracket with a 4-2 defeat to sixth-ranked Cochise, Ariz., on Friday morning but ousted Lamar with a 9-1 afternoon victory.

WNC (43-19) earned another shot at Cochise behind the pitching of Christian Stolo and Evan Parker, as well as a six-run fifth inning.

A Carson City man faces a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly swinging a machete in a dispute with his brother and another man over a vehicle.

Jesus Guardron-Patino was jailed May 14 after being arrested at 9:25 p.m. in the 200 block of Jeanell Drive.

According to the arrest report, officers responded to the area after a report called in of a man hitting the ground and a brick building with a sword. Officers detained Guardron-Patino and made contact with two men, one of whom is the brother of Guardron-Patino.

On Thursday, SJR 13, which legalizes same-sex marriage, passed in the Assembly Committee and will be voted on next on the Assembly Floor.

As the price of gold hit its lowest level in a month Thursday, the Assembly Committee on Taxation took a vote on a controversial resolution that would remove the state’s long-standing mining tax cap. Senate Joint Resolution 15 made its way through the Legislature during the 2011 session and needs only to pass in the Assembly before June 4 in order to go to a public vote next year.

At Hallelujah Junction, take S.R. 70 west toward Portola and Quincy.

There is no place like someone else’s home, at least for the Western Nevada College baseball team. Since March 23, the Wildcats have played 19 of 23 games on the road, compiling an 18-5 record.

That ability to focus and excel away from home will come in handy this weekend in Sterling, Colo., as the Wildcats pursue their second straight Western District Championship and a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series.
