Update: A home and trailer were heavily damaged by a fire on South Curry Street in Carson City today.
Residents Kathleen Stevens and her daughter Elizabeth Nix were able to escape without injury. Firefighters rescued their dog, Thor.
"The dog is my soulmate," Nix said. "I don't know what I would do without him."
Fire crews are still on the scene, and no cause has been determined yet. The fire broke out shortly after noon. The home is located next to the Ormsby House.

Here are the 2010 winners of the Carson City Silver Dollar Car Classic held this weekend at Mills Park. The event brought hundreds of car enthusiasts to Carson City for the weekend before many moved on to Reno for the Hot August Nights celebration.

The first Northern Nevada RC Air Show hosted by the High Sierra RC Club took place Saturday at the Pony Express Model Airpark.

A 23-year-old Carson City man faces a felony child abuse and a gross domestic battery charge after admitting to abusing a 20-month-old toddler.
David Phillip Gawdun, who lives in the 1700 block of Russell Way, is being held on $43,132 bond in the Carson City Jail after he was arrested on Saturday. In an interview, he has admitted to slapping the girl and other instances of child abuse on the toddler and the girl's 3-year-old brother.

After signing a contract to adopt Blackwell's Pond Park in Carson City, Kiwanis of Sierra Nevada Past-President Lee Pisiewski organized seven other members to to trim weeds and rake up at the park on Saturday, July 31.

Here is the Carson City road construction report for Aug. 2-8. As always, plan ahead and be prepared for some minor delays. As a result of the next phase of the Nevada Department of Transportation freeway project, the following closures will occur:
— Valley View Drive has been permanently closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive.
—Koontz Lane will be closed between Raglan Circle and Edmonds Drive until January 2011.
The Roop Street widening project is continuing and is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. The following impacts are expected this week:

Hundreds of car enthusiasts from Nevada and California made their way to Mills Park in Carson City today for the annual Carson City Silver Dollar Car Classic.
The car show, which continues through Sunday, is among the region's biggest draws, with more than 300 restored, tricked-out, and souped-up cars and trucks on display.
Saturday's ideal weather conditions and the tree coverage of Mills Park made it a great event for the entire family, organizers said.

Two Care Flight helicopters were summoned to the Carson City Airport this afternoon on two separate medical events including a car accident involving a child.
The car accident in the Northgate Lane area of Carson City was reported at 1:37 this afternoon. In a separate call, at 1:38, an air ambulance was needed for an overdose patient, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
Reports are that a 10-year-old girl was injured in the car accident, Furlong said. The extent of the child's injuries are unknown, Furlong added.

We had heard rumors of recent activity at the never-opened Sportsman's Warehouse store in the Southgate Center on South Carson Street.
And now, it looks like there will be a new Big Lots store moving in this fall.
While a discount closeout store isn't exactly the kind of high-end (or medium-end) store residents might have been hoping for, it's better than an empty storefront.

A small brush fire reported near the intersection of Goni Road and Arrowhead Drive actually turned out to be farther away, with the location being the intersection of Mark Way and Emerson, Carson City fire officials report tonight.
The roughly 20 foot by 20 foot fire, caused by wind that knocked tree branches into a power line which caused a spark, was extinguished shortly after crews arrived, said Dan Shirey, battalion chief in operations for the Carson City Fire Department.

CARSON CITY – Nevadans who are eligible to have their jobless benefits reactivated can expect letters by next week with instructions, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation (DETR) said today.
The agency began mailing letters Thursday to individuals whose Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) claims are being reinstated following action by Congress last week to extend federal unemployment benefits through November.

Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons announced the appointment today of Caleb Cage as the executive director of the Nevada Office of Veterans Services.
Cage presently serves as a Senior Policy Advisor/Rural and Veterans Issues for Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki.
Cage attained the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq as recently as 2006. Captain Cage was awarded the Army’s Bronze Star Medal for his service in Iraq. He is a 2002 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

Carson City authorities have arrested four people on multiple drug charges, including two arrests for alleged felony heroin possession.
Authorities assigned to the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team had gleaned information on Thursday that several alleged known heroin users were hiding at a home in the 2800 block of Airport Road in Carson City.

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Legislature has reached agreement with a firm hired to help analyze the state’s revenue structure to complete a portion of the project.
The agreement reached with Moody’s Analytics requires the firm to finish the Nevada Vision Stakeholder Group portion of the contract by Sept. 15. It will require more work by the firm and two more meetings of the Vision Stakeholder Group, but the payment will remain at the initial bid of just under $100,000.

More charges could soon be filed against a Carson City man believed to be involved in a burglary ring that spans over multiple Northern Nevada counties.
Bryan Allen Gaudette, 24, faces five additional felony counts of burglary and is being held in the Carson City Jail on $25,000 bond.
He is currently in custody for other items already recovered in the same case, authorities report.

A Carson City man faces a felony assault charge after he had a fight with his girlfriend and allegedly grabbed her by the neck and bit her on the chin.
Jesus Atan-Lopez, 31, was arrested at around 10 p.m. in the 3300 block of Carson Street. His bail was set at $5,000.
