The romantic comedy "Just Go With It," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is the latest Hollywood genre poke that, though has its moments, chiefly those involving Jennifer Aniston, it is marred by stupid toilet jokes aimed at making kids laugh and a couple of easily disliked young actors.

A week after two storms dropped at least a foot of snow in Carson City and several feet in the Sierra, another storm will move into the area late Thursday into Friday and is expected bring between 3 to 8 inches to the capital city and several feet above Lake Tahoe.

The heaviest snow with the system should be dropping by early Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno and Carsonweather.com.

The Nevada State Health Division in Carson City announced Hugh Gallagher Elementary School in Virginia City as the winner of a logo contest for its statewide hand washing campaign, “Hey Nevada, Wash Your Hands!”

The winning logo will serve as part of the campaign’s identity, and will be incorporated into various campaign media. The second place entry was a tie between Yerington Elementary School and L.S. Bruner Elementary in North Las Vegas.

Saturday evening, March 5, will be the date of my all-time favorite fundraiser: The highly-popular and fun-filled, Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser, which will be held as usual at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
More importantly, this year’s version will be its 25th.

Wow! 25 years! Congrats for all you have done for Nevada’s wildlife!

The Clear Creek Bowmen, an archery organization in Carson City, will host their annual “Hell or High Water” archery shoot on Sunday, March 13.
That shoot will be held at the Centennial Park Archery Range (east of the Eagle Valley Golf Course), just off of U.S. 50.

It will be a target archery competition with all ages welcome.
Registration begins at 8 a.m., with competition shooting beginning at 9 a.m.

Registration fees are:

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has announced the release of the 200,000th wild bird in southern Arizona.

The trapped bird was one of 15 Gould's wild turkeys captured in the Coronado National Forest and then taken to Gardner Canyon near Tucson.

NWTF says Gardner Canyon has suitable habitat but no wild turkeys.

Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) game wardens are seeking the public’s help to solve a criminal case of several deer shot and left to waste in Voltaire Canyon near Carson City.

Game wardens discovered one dead buck Jan. 12, and tracked the trails of at least seven other injured deer in the Voltaire Canyon area.

RENO, Nev. – A new, rapid blood test that could lead to early diagnosis and potentially save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people stricken with fungal meningitis, a leading cause of AIDS-related deaths in developing countries, is getting closer to market with a recent collaboration between the University of Nevada, Reno and Immuno-Mycologics (IMMY) in Oklahoma.

The CARD Nevada Autism Conference is hosted by the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), one of the world’s largest and most experienced organizations effectively treating children with autism, Asperger’s syndrome and related disorders.

The Carson City School District board meets tonight at 7 p.m. and will take up, among other things, a settlement agreement reached Feb. 8 with the U.S Department of Justice regarding policies of its English Language Learner programs. Winter finally paid a visit to Carson City. After six weeks of Spring time throughout January and February, Mother nature finally decided to wake up and dump some snow on us. And it was a good size dumping too, at least 6 inches, more in some parts of town. We went to Lake Tahoe and I sunk in fresh powder up to my thigh! But it’s good to finally get some snow, even though we were getting a taste of Spring and got used to it. We’re having a few sunny days now, so all the ice can melt off the roads, but by Thursday we’re supposed to be back under the grip of another storm system. Sen. Harry Reid spoke at a joint session of the Nevada Legislature this morning, asking legislators not to cut education, and to have "an adult conversation" about outlawing prostitution.

The call for ending legal brothels was met by a a cool reception from the legislators who gave it only a smattering of applause followed by an uneasy silence. In the gallery was BunnyRanch owner Dennis Hof and some of his working girls.

Here's a news coverage roundup of Monday's labor union rally in Carson City, which brought out a few hundred supporters and a few dozen Tea Party demonstrators.

During March and April, groups and individuals are invited to partner with the Dayton Food Pantry for The Feinstein $1 Million Challenge to fight hunger.

Mary Piper, organizer for the local Challenge, explained, “If groups donate non-perishable food items or money to Dayton Food Pantry in March and April, the Feinstein Foundation will add funds. The more donations we receive, the larger our slice of the pie will be.”

The last time I wrote about pogonip, I got a correction that these ice crystals should more properly be considered a hoar frost, or rime frost. It is the fog itself that is pogonip, from the Shoshone phrase for “freezing death”, the idea being that if you breathe it in the crystals will form in your lungs and bad things will happen. I think the etymology is probably correct, but we have built a regional identity around the word “pogonip”, taking this cool frost that forms in a lot of places around the world, and in some small way making it our own.

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will present a concert, "French Passion," on Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Carson City Community Center.
The concert features guest violinist Andrew Sords in a performance of Eduoard Lalo's "Symphonie espagnole." This all-French program, suitable for people of all ages, also includes Georges Bizet's "L'Arlesienne Suite No. 1" and Gabriel Faure's "Dolly Suite."
Pre-concert entertainment begins at 3 p.m. in the lobby and a Meet-the-Soloist preview begins at 3:15 p.m. in the Sierra Room.

Carson City attorney Wally Earhart will portray President Lincoln and deliver the Comstock Historical Lecture at the revival of Virginia City's Bonanza Days on March 5.

He will be joined by the Comstock Civil War Re-enactors who will assist in hosting the dinner in character. The Marshall Mint will premiere the first strike of its new Big Bonanza commemorative silver coin at the event.

With labor momentum building to a showdown in Wisconsin, a rally in support of Nevada workers will be held in Carson City at noon Monday on the front steps of the Legislature Building.

"It has never been more important than now to stand in solidarity with Wisconsin workers and workers around the country, including Nevada workers, who are under attack from politicians bent on destroying the labor movement," said Danny L. Thompson, executive secretary treasurer of the Nevada AFL-CIO.
