A team of athletes, many of whom are wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, will leave from Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday for World T.E.A.M. Sports’ inaugural bike trek across America called Sea to Shining Sea. The group will arrive in Carson City on May 28 on their way to their Virginia Beach, Va., destination.

CARSON CITY – While Republican voters have a rare chance to chart the course of the GOP Senate caucus in the upcoming primary, the candidates described by some political observers as the establishment choice say they too are true fiscal conservatives who believe in core party values.

Tensions quickly arose during a discussion on the economic effects of illegal immigration at a town hall forum in Reno yesterday.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Steven Camarota, director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies, said that immigration – both legal and illegal – creates a “fiscal drain� on public services that is significantly larger than the “miniscule� effect that they have on the per capita income of the nation.

Three people face multiple criminal charges after a fight early Tuesday morning in the 2000 block of Hawaii Circle in Carson City.
Officers were dispatched to the home for a report of domestic battery in progress with a possible weapon involved. An anonymous person alerted dispatch of a fight involving several people.

As deputies arrived there were two men standing in the front lawn and a woman standing in the doorway of the home. The men have been identified as Steven Barnes, 48, and Joshua Emborsky, 21. The woman was identified as Elysia Varney, 19.

Every year at this time for the past few seasons, there would be speculation that Buddy Gouldsmith would be released as UNLV's baseball coach.

RENO -- Most players go a lifetime without hitting 6-for-6. For former Western Nevada College baseball star Brian Barnett, "a while," when it comes to the last time he has gone 6-for-6 was a little more than a year.
Barnett had his second straight game in which he went 3-for-3 as he helped the University of Nevada baseball team (31-19-1) come back for an 8-6 win over UC Davis on Tuesday at Peccole Park. Barnett's 14th home run of the season gave the Wolf Pack that 8-6 lead in the seventh inning.

After coming up short on the last day last year, A.J. McInerney and the Coronado Cougars emerged with top honors from the NIAA 4A State Boys Golf Championships on Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong and the city are being sued for $10,000 by a former deputy sheriff who is alleging defamation, invasion of privacy, false light and emotional distress. Download the PDF of the lawsuit here.

The plaintiff, Paula Andrews, was the subject of an internal investigation involving falsifying documents and grand larceny in December 2008. According to the lawsuit, the investigation concluded the allegations were unfounded. Nevertheless, the plaintiff was later "constructively discharged."
