Feather River College and Carson High graduate Kyle Stone will begin a new season on Friday when the California state community college baseball playoffs get under way.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons is touting his successes in implementing recommendations from his SAGE Commission on ways to improve efficiencies and save money in state government, but many of the proposals remain in progress or will require action by the 2011 Legislature.

Of the 27 businesses that front the Plaza 50 in Carson City, home of the anchor store Sak N' Save, many of its merchants are now left to gauge how their own operations will change after learning the grocery store will close its doors for good on May 30.

But the show will go on for many of the merchants, who vow to put their best face on an otherwise bad situation. Much like the recession has been thus far in the capital city, the collective wisdom remains "hope for the best."

The Nevada Bighorns summer collegiate baseball team is gearing up for another season in which the Carson City-based club will again bring high level play to the area.
 
The season is less than a month away with opening day set for Saturday, May 29. The Bighorns will host the San Francisco Seals at 5 p.m. at John L. Harvey Field. The Bighorns will then play a doubleheader against the Seals, beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 30, at John L. Harvey Field.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley spoke today about a number of issues concerning both Nevada and the nation, including immigration reform and Nevada’s projected budget shortfall.

CARSON CITY — According to data released by the Nevada Secretary of State yesterday, the number of total registered Democrats only rose by 58 in April, fewer than the number of new registered members of Nevada’s largest third party, the Independent American Party, which has 374 more registered voters. This is also well under the 710 new nonpartisan voters and 1,268 new Republican voters.

A 20-year-old unemployed Carson City man faces felony larceny charges after he stole a firearm from a capital city weapons dealer because he "needed money."

Jonathan Crandell Jr. faces a felony charge of larceny of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon after he and two friends walked into Wilburs Guns and Knives on Goni Road and walked out with the a Sig Arms P232 hand gun, according to the arrest report.

Tammy Westergard is leaving her job as deputy director of the Carson City Office of Business Development to take a similar position at the Carson City Library.

The rumor has been floating around for a while, and Tammy confirmed it to me this morning.

Moving over to the library probably will not remove her entirely from the world of business development, considering the library's central role in the Nugget Project.

The former Silver Dollar Club, now Jackpot Crossing, is open on Fairview, one block south of Highway 50 East.

The casino was purchased by Northern Nevada Comstock Investments last year, who shut the business down in August for a complete remodel. The company also owns Cactus Jack's, The Senator Club and the Comstock Casino in Carson City, as well as casinos in Fernley and Fallon.

With one of its games rained out early in the season, the Western Nevada College baseball team has always had one contest it could make up and when the chance came to play the Reno Astros semipro baseball team, the Wildcats jumped at the chance.
 
WNC will host the Astros at 3 p.m. Tuesday at John L. Harvey Field. The game will help the Wildcats prepare for a crucial series against Colorado Northwestern Community College.

The Carson City Redevelopment Authority Citizen Committee will discuss five funding requests from the agency's revolving fund, totaling more than $125,444.

The meeting is tonight at 5:30 p.m. at the Sierra Room at the Community Center. We will have live video coverage of the meeting.

James and Jea Gotchy, owners of Lily’s China Bistro at 1280 S. Carson Street, are asking for funding assistance of $40,180.

Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation is seeking funding assistance of $37,364 to support a property improvement project at 303 Fleischmann Way.

A 28-year-old California man was arrested and faces felony fraud charges after he allegedly passed two phony $100 bills in exchange for a motorcycle for sale on Craigslist.

Deputies were dispatched to the Jack in the Box on South Carson Street on Saturday. The victim told officers that he had placed a motorcycle for sale on Craigslist and was contacted by the suspect who said he would buy the bike for $200.

A meeting took place at the Jack in the Box and the suspect gave the victim the fake bills and the bike was exchanged, according to the arrest report.

Former U.S. senator, Vietnam war hero, advocate for disabled veterans and author Max Cleland will speak to Democrats in Carson City on Wednesday, officials announced Sunday.

The Carson City Democratic Central Committee invited the former Georgia senator to speak about ongoing policy issues for the November midterm election. He will address the public at 7 p.m. in the AFSCME building at the southwest corner of Robinson and Roop streets in Carson City.

Now that all of the preliminaries are out of the way, the Carson High swimming and diving team is ready to focus on the final three weeks of its season -- the High Desert League, Northern 4A Regional and NIAA state championship meets.

The Carson High J.V. baseball team ran into a hot-hitting Bishop Manogue squad on Saturday, losing both ends of a Sierra League doubleheader at home, 16-4 and 15-4.

While the Western Nevada College softball team couldn't pull off another upset against one of the nation's top teams, the Wildcats came away from this weekend's series against College of Southern Idaho knowing it could compete with one of the Scenic West Athletic Conference's elite clubs.

CSI swept a doubleheader against WNC on Saturday in Twin Falls, Idaho, winning the opener 6-3 and the nightcap 14-7. WNC was tied with CSI 3-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning in the opener and led 7-5 in the nightcap.

The Nevada Appeal has uncovered a few new tidbits about Nugget Project consultant Mark Lewis.

Following the piece I wrote on Lewis this week, the Appeal found a grand jury report dealing with Lewis' big project developments as city manager of Stockton, Calif. The report showed that costs associated with development of the the Stockton ballpark and events center swelled from an estimate of $75 million to more than $120 million, and placed the blame for this on Lewis and the lack of oversight by the city's elected officials.
