A 60-year-old California woman was killed in a crosswalk in the Stateline, Lake Tahoe casino district early Saturday morning, and a 36-year-old man faces felony DUI and possible vehicular manslaughter charges, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

Joan Marie Hamrick of Valley Springs, Calif., died from injuries after being hit on Highway 50 in the casino district by a truck at 1:17 a.m. that was driven by David Ray Stephenson, 36, of Discovery Bay, Calif., said Trooper Daniel Lopez. Hamrick was airlifted from Kahle Park to Renown Regional Medical Center where she died Saturday.

Carson City Sheriff deputies arrested Terry David Vickers, 45, Thursday evening after a woman reported that he had beat and strangled her into unconsciousness, and assaulted her with a screwdriver.

According to the arrest report, the victim told deputies that Vickers began the assault Wednesday night when he slapped her at a restaurant on North Carson Street. She said after leaving the restaurant she made contact with some friends and left with them, not returning to the motel room she shared with Vickers until Thursday morning.

CARSON CITY – Rep. Joe Heck, R-Nev., announced today he will back a spending reduction plan put forth by House Speaker John Boehner because it proposes a balanced budget amendment that will protect the United States’ AAA credit rating.

I haven't been doing hiking of late because of a back problem, but with my new electronic "tickle belt" I'm able to hit the hills again.

I recently returned to my old favorite Dead Man's Creek on Eastlake Boulevard about 5 miles from downtown Carson. It was 90-plus that day so I turned back burned out before reaching the gazebo that perches at the end of the trail, but I did discover a new sign at the trailhead, courtesy of Nevada Division of State Parks. It's one of the best trail signs I've seen in recent times.
