A few minutes before 9 a.m., a lone gunman armed with automatic AK-47-type assault rifle drives up to the IHOP on South Carson Street, and begins shooting in the parking lot. Locals BBQ owner Ralph Swagler said he saw the man drive up, and then empty a clip of ammo outside the IHOP, then reloads and goes inside, where he fires more shots very rapidly and exits within a few seconds.

Swagler said the gunman then saw his son locking the door of their business and opened fire at them. He also allegedly fired shots at the H&R Block office next door. Sometime after, the gunman shot himself, and died later at the hospital.

One of the National Guard members killed in today's shooting rampage at the IHOP in Carson City was a man; the other was a woman, MSNBC reports. The shooter is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and another person is also dead. The suspect, who hasn't been identified, apparently acted alone and died at a hospital in Reno, officials said.

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) issued the following statement today regarding the shootings in Carson City:
“I am deeply saddened by the news of today’s tragic event in Carson. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims as well as their families and loved ones. I commend the medical and law enforcement communities for their professionalism during this crisis,” said Senator Heller.

Washington, D.C. — Nevada Senator Harry Reid made the following statement after several people were shot in Carson City this morning:

The final Harry Potter movie is out this summer. It's a tale of magical kids attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, being empowered, and learning wicked things like Arithmacy, Potions, Care of Magical Creatures, and Quiddich. This makes some real-world parents uncomfortable. Children learning things we don't know, things beyond the "straight and narrow", things that empower them, is scary.
