Comstock Conflagration: Exciting Adventures During the Fabulous Virginia City Bonanza

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-Carson City Library will host author Larry Wilcox Tanner on Tuesday, August 21st at 6:00 p.m. “Comstock Conflagration: Exciting Adventures During the Fabulous Virginia City Bonanza”, published by Kettlebelly Enterprises in 2010, is a historical novel about a sheriff in Virginia City during the era of the Comstock Lode. His book will be available for purchase. This program is free and open to the public.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested the following individuals based on felony or gross misdemeanor allegations:

  • Ashley Dawn Pion, 18, a Carson City woman, at 4 a.m. Thursday. Pion was arrested based on a gross misdemeanor warrant out of Douglas County in her name, for violation of a restraining order. Bail is set at $5,000.

Here is an interview I did with Steve Neighbors, Hop and Mae Adams Foundation trustee and president of the Carson Nugget, talking about the new business incubator. Sorry, it took awhile to get the video up. Neighbors talks about how the foundation bought the old Stewart Title building in downtown Carson City and plan to locate the much-talked-about business incubator there. He also mentions they are looking at other locations to put other incubators to help people start new businesses.

Talk about a “dog with a bone”!

The Republican House of Representatives has once again voted to eliminate the Corporation for National and Community Service (“CNCS”). The first time they did this, the Senate voted it down and you would have thought that’s that.

If seeing all those Hot August Nights cars cruising the streets has you itching to buy a hot rod, then head over to Silver Oak Golf Course Friday through Sunday for the Silver Auctions event.

Hundreds of classic cars will be up for bidding, as well as associated memorabilia. The car auctions will be in the afternoon all three days starting at 1 p.m., with the memorabilia auctions starting each day at 11.

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Department of Transportation is offering a new feature on its website making it easier to find information about Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs) and for the businesses to provide detailed information about the goods and services they provide.

The agency’s Civil Rights Division unveiled the advanced search feature to simplify the process of identifying DBEs.

Lake Tahoe will be thrust in the spotlight again when scientists, public agencies and elected officials meet Aug. 13 for the 16th annual Lake Tahoe Summit. To be discussed with great interest is the protection and health of Lake Tahoe's fragile environment and economy.
“The health of the environment and the health of the economy at Tahoe are linked,” Derek Kauneckis, political science professor and researcher at the University of Nevada, Reno said. “And the collaborations that have been established at the Lake have set the stage for future efforts.”

CARSON CITY – Nevada casinos took in $832.5 million in gaming revenue in June, a decline of 6 percent compared to the same month a year ago, the Gaming Control Board reported today.

The win was about $53 million less than June 2011 as casinos tried to build on the win in June 2011, which was up 16 percent over June 2010.

The Carson Nugget unveiled its newly remodeled banquet facilities to members of the Carson City Chamber “Breakfast Club” this week.

Star Anderson, General Manager of the Carson Nugget told the group; “The old, dated colors are gone and what you see now is a clean, modern facility that can serve a variety of needs from gatherings as small as 10 to as large as 400.” She added; “This type of facility is one that is very much needed in the Carson City area and we are happy to fill that need.”

SPARKS – U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., showed up at a Sparks floral shop today to receive the endorsement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in his reelection bid against Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev.

The national endorsement was made by former U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, who said the choice was clear for the organization.

Natural forces and human actions have affected the lake s clarity, physics, chemistry and biology since 1968, when UC Davis first began continuous monitoring of Lake Tahoe.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrested the following individuals based on felony or gross misdemeanor allegations:

  • Terris Lee French III, 35, a Carson City man, at 10:30 p.m. Friday. French was arrested for robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and violation of Parole and Probation restrictions. No bail has been set.
  • Jose Garcia-Gaona, 35, a Carson City man, at 1 p.m. Saturday. Garcia-Gaona was arrested for an unspecified felony warrant as well as trafficking of methamphetamines (588 grams). Bail is set at $252,500.

Gaming revenue, known as "win" for Carson City area casinos, saw a slight increase of 1.11 percent for the month of June, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reported Thursday.
Carson City area casinos, which includes Minden and Gardnerville in Douglas County, took in in $8,229,305 in June compared to $8,136,730 during the same period last year.
Meanwhile South Shore Lake Tahoe area casinos posted a 17 percent increase for the month of June, taking in a "win" of $16,555,235 in June of this year compared to $14,128,801 during the same period in 2011.

It’s that time of the year again. This is my annual reminder that if you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun. I do not like the summer months.
I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.
I am miserable and grouchy during hot weather months, especially August.

Matthew was born and raised at South Shore and grew up loving skiing, snowboarding, hiking and all things outdoors. He was active in school sports, and had a great love for all animals. Matthew was in the process of following his dream by attending motorcycle mechanic school in Phoenix.

Matthew is survived by his parents, Barry and Nancy McMaster of Stateline, Nv, brother Tobias (Melanie) Sharp, and nephew Tyler Sharp, of South Lake Tahoe, and Grandmother Madeline Kerr of Carson City, Nevada.

Tonight is National Night Out at Mills Park, an event put on by the Carson City Sheriff's Office. This is the 10th anniversary of the event, and will feature lots of fun activities for children. The event runs from 5-8 p.m.

CARSON CITY – States do not face any deadline for deciding whether to expand their Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act, and will be able to expand coverage and then later chose to reduce it, federal officials told Governing magazine on Monday.

CARSON CITY – Nevada has been selected by the National Governors Association to receive a $65,000 grant and additional technical assistance to implement Common Core State Standards at the postsecondary education level.

CARSON CITY – With U.S. Sen. Harry Reid’s 5th annual National Clean Energy Summit set to kick off today in Las Vegas, the debate over alternative energy development and the government’s role in its future rages on.

South Lake Tahoe fire and police departments responded to a gas leak Monday night which forced the outside evacuation of at least a two block area of Highway 50 from Fairway to Herbert. Lakeland Village and Howard Johnsons guests were ordered to stay in their rooms as of 11 p.m. Areas outside the lodging establishments on both the east and west sides of Highway 50, (Lake Tahoe Boulevard) were evacuated, with guests being ordered to stay inside.

Carson City sheriff's deputies arrested Donald Tremayne Britton, 38, a Carson City man, at 9 p.m. Wednesday. Britton was arrested on a fugitive from justice (murder) warrant in his name and extradited to Oakland by the Oakland Police Department Thursday. There is no bail.

Officers have also arrested the following individuals based on misdemeanor allegations:

  • A 28-year-old Carson City woman for a contempt of court warrant in her name.
  • A 51-year-old Carson City woman for a petit larceny warrant in her name.
