Carson City firefighters were able to get a good jump on a brush fire burning early this afternoon near the Bertagnolli quarry in the Brunswick Canyon area. Reports coming in via police scanner is that the fire is under control and mop up has begun.
As of about 1:15 this afternoon much of the fire was said to have been knocked down, no structures were burned and cleanup had begun. Flames were reportedly six feet high with the fire generating lots of smoke. The fire, reported at 12:35, was said to be about 100 x 100 feet wide, according to police scanner traffic.

Detectives of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death of a Placerville woman who fell from a 14th floor balcony at the Horizon Casino Resort in Stateline on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.

The body of the woman, later identified as Loretta Sangara, 68, of Placerville, was discovered by Horizon Casino security officers at about 10 a.m. on Friday, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jim Halsey in a news release.

An motor home fire has shut down the Carson City bypass and the Highway 50 east entrance to the freeway this evening. According to witnesses on the scene and police scanner traffic, the motor home, parked on the freeway between Fairview and 5th Street near the bridge, went up in flames at around 5:33 this afternoon. It was extinguished at around 5:50 p.m.

CARSON CITY – Officials with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services put out the word today that a new affordable health insurance plan is available for Nevadans with pre-existing medical conditions.
The plan, offered through the new federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, will serve as a bridge to cover this group of people between today and Jan. 1, 2014, when the major provisions of the law take effect, said Herb Shultz, regional director of HHS for Nevada.

CARSON CITY – Nevada ranks 46th among states in the total amount of federal subsidy payments to farmers and ranchers over the past 16 years, with 89 percent receiving no payments at all, according to information from the Washington, DC-based Environmental Working Group.
