St. Mary’s in the Mountains Catholic Church of Virginia City, will celebrate the 150th Anniversary of its founding with three days of celebration on September 14, 15 and 16, 2012. This icon of the Comstock is the birthplace of Catholicism in the State of Nevada.

The celebration will begin on Friday evening, September 14, with a wine tasting as well as guided tours of the historic and recently renovated church and museum, 4 pm to 6 pm. Wine from St. Mary’s Mad Monk Wine Cellar and commemorative glasses will be available for purchase.

NV Energy warned on Thursday of another scam designed to obtain credit card numbers and money transfers from unsuspecting customers. The company has learned that imposters are calling customers demanding payments and threatening to turn off power.
Company spokesman Karl Walquist said NV Energy does not call customers about utility payments, regardless if they owe money. The company does not solicit credit card or other payments over the phone. Customers whose accounts are in arrears are notified through the U.S. Postal Service that payment is due.

The Tunnel Creek Cafe up at Incline Village is now open! Max Jones and Patti McMullan, who currently own and operate Flume Trail Bikes at Spooner Lake, have recently opened a new cafe at Tunnel Creek Station. The cafe is located on Tunnel Creek Road near the old Ponderosa Ranch which was used for filming the 1960s television western Bonanza. More importantly though, the Tunnel Creek Cafe is at one end of the world famous Flume Trail.

Authorities are asking the public for help in locating a couple wanted for questioning in the murder of Minnesota man whose remains were found in a shallow grave found earlier this year in a backcountry area of Douglas County.
The skeletal remains of Francisco Alejandro Lopez-Gonzalez, who was reported missing since May 2011 by family members, were discovered in a shallow grave on Feb. 22. His death was ruled a homicide.

CARSON CITY – The state Board of Examiners on Tuesday will consider settling a dispute with Washoe County over $21.5 million in local property tax revenue taken by the 2009 Legislature to balance the state budget.

The proposed settlement would provide an immediate payment of $1.25 million to the county, with another $6 million being allocated later for major road maintenance projects.

A year ago today, Carson City experienced an unspeakable event in the tragic shooting at our local IHOP restaurant. Whether you were at work, school, home or going about your day, you no doubt remember Sept. 6, 2011, and the senseless act of violence that touched our community. Fear and anxiety was followed by a sense of urgency and the desire to do something; and these emotions turned into sadness and grief. But through it all, as members of the Nevada family, we found each other.
