Twenty-nine homes were destroyed or rendered uninhabitable by the dangerous wildfire that blasted out of the foothills of southwest Reno on Friday.

Firefighters expected to have the 2,000-acre Caughlin Fire fully contained today, with fire lines cut around fire areas.

Evacuated homeowners were allowed to return noon Saturday, most of them grateful to enter homes firefighters managed to protect from the wind-whipped firestorm. Others found smoking ruins.

CARSON CITY — A group seeking to evaluate the state’s foreclosure mediation efforts has been told it will be charged nearly $1 million to review records of the negotiations between banks and homeowners.

Civil Rights for Seniors, a California nonprofit group, wants access to the records to see how cooperative banks have been and to independently verify how successful the mediation program is.

The state argues privacy is key to the program’s success: If people believe information they present could become public, some might not participate.

The girlfriend of a 59-year-old Topaz Ranch Estates man found shot to death in his home was arrested in Los Angeles early Friday and charged with murder with use of a firearm or other deadly weapon after she was found hiding in a closet at her brother's house.

Bail was set at $1 million for Jeanine Mona Escandon, 38, who was incarcerated in Los Angeles pending extradition to Nevada.

Crystal Trujillo, 26, will be tried on charges of attempted murder and leaving the scene of an accident for allegedly running over her boyfriend on Sept. 22. After a three-hour preliminary hearing, the judge found there was enough evidence to bring the case to trial in district court. Witness Chris Gravenstein told how he saw Trujillo drive over Shiloh Richards, 30, and described how the victim was rendered unconscious, and had tire marks on his bare chest.

Carson City police officers made several arrests on Thursday, including that of Stuart Nichols, 43, an unemployed Carson City man. Nichols was arrested around 4:30 a.m. near Empire Ranch Road and Short Putt Drive.
