The Nevada Housing Division today announced a new low mortgage rate for Nevada's first-time homebuyers. The Division is offering a dramatically low mortgage 3.50% interest rate for a 30-year fixed rate loan to qualified buyers.

A fired state pilot said the Nevada Department of Transportation refuses to rehire or make a financial settlement with him, though the state Supreme Court ruled he must be given a flying job.

"Basically NDOT has ruined me," former state pilot James Richardson said. "I feel the whole weight of the state is on me, and I haven't committed a crime."

On its face, the Nevada Policy Research Institute lawsuit against state Sen. Mo Denis and the state is ludicrous.

The notion that somehow Denis' duties repairing computers for the Public Utilities Commission somehow conflicts with his legislative duties is far-fetched. He has no power in the executive branch with that — let me think of a word — ministerial job, so why sue him over it?

The Carson City Board of Supervisors yesterday approved new boundary maps for the city's four wards, with slight changes from the previous boundaries. One change involved moving residents living south of King Street and north of West Fifth Street between Carson and Thompson streets from Ward 4 to Ward 1. The board also gave final approval to allow advertising on bus shelters, and made changes to water applications to allow better distribution of water between Carson, Lyon and Douglas counties. It was also announced that two donations totaling $71,773 has been given to Animal Services for the construction and operation of a new animal shelter.

A trio of consumers got an early start in telling the state Public Utilities Commission that the installation of smart meters by Nevada Power Co. would result in higher electric rates for customers and especially hurt the elderly.

“With smart meters, rates will go up,’’ said Rana Goodman in an appearance before the commission Wednesday in Las Vegas.

The testimony came in advance of a workshop by the PUC on Dec. 6 in Carson City on the smart meter issues.
