Last Saturday evening (Dec. 3), the Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association (OSA) of Carson City held its traditional end-of-the-year banquet at the Carson Nugget and ended the 2011 year on a high note.

This is the third in a series of photos of oddities that were seen on a six week vacation trip to Italy in September and October, 2011.
That trip was taken by Bob and Lorraine Scholes of Dayton and Don and Elaine Quilici of Carson City, as they traveled the length and width of Italy, plus being on the Island of Sicily and in Switzerland.

Attorneys General Kamala D. Harris of California and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada today announced that their states have entered into a joint investigation alliance designed to assist homeowners who have been harmed by misconduct and fraud in the mortgage industry.

By forging this alliance, California and Nevada will combine investigative resources, including litigation strategies, information, and evidence gathered through their respective ongoing investigations, assisting each state as it pursues independent prosecutions.

Thomas Patrick Burtt, 30, was arrested Friday near the intersection of Carson and Telegraph streets for felony assault with a deadly weapon after he attempted to flee from a traffic stop.

Rumors that the Carson City school calendar and the daily start time for classes are changing is false, according to Superintendent Richard Stokes. While there are studies showing that teens perform better when they don't have to wake up early, Stokes said the district is not ready to change their start times without seeking input from all parties. He also said the school calendar will likely be similar to this year, with classes starting the third week of August.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church will be participating in the Compassionate Friends nationwide candlelight vigil on Sunday honoring children "gone too soon." Participants plan to gather at 6:30 p.m. at the church at the corner of Saliman and Highway 50, with the vigil beginning at 7 p.m.

Health inspectors found 22 critical food safety violation at Nevada prisons this year, including spoiled food, insects and rodents. All violations were corrected.

Help make a child smile at Christmas by attending the second annual “Cookies with Santa,” a benefit for The Ron Wood Family Resource Center, Saturday, Dec. 10, at Adele’s Restaurant and Lounge.

The Ron Wood Family Resource Center helps individuals, families and the community locate assistance and provides an array of support services.

The fun takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes a visit and photograph with Santa Claus, cookies, cocoa and cider, as well as acoustic Christmas music performed in the lounge by The Dowell Boyz.

A project to complete a new north-south water transmission line on the east side of Carson City will result in activity on Fairview Drive south of Fifth Street. There will be lane closures with flagger controlled traffic. Delays are expected.

There will be work at the following locations as a result of the Freeway Landscaping Project. No closures are expected.

  • North Carson Street, in the vicinity of the freeway overpass.
  • Arrowhead Drive between North Carson Street and Garnet Way.
  • Northgate Lane between Jumbo Court and Dyer Court.
