This designation is awarded only to facilities that adhere to top breastfeeding standards set by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

During the weekend of July 13, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a DUI checkpoint. In addition to focusing on impaired drivers, the checkpoint will also be looking for underage drinking, driver’s license and registration violations.

A 38-year-old South Lake Tahoe man faces a felony charge of assaulting a police officer and two misdemeanor charges after he was arrested early Sunday following a struggle with Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies in the 4600 block of Snyder Avenue.

Raymond Michael Elben is in the Carson City jail with bail of $11,549. According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the area before midnight Saturday for a report of a man on the ground.

Containment of the Bison Fire burning in Douglas County is expected by July 14 as firefighters had a series of setbacks because of windy conditions, the Bureau of Land Management reports in its Monday morning briefing.

The fire has been downgraded to 15 percent contained with the wind event that occurred Sunday afternoon, according to the Great Basin Management Type II Team, operating under Incident Commander Mike Whalen

A foot chase ended with the arrest of a Carson City man Saturday who faces felony burglary and stolen property charges after allegedly breaking into a home and stealing credit cards.

Javier Martinez, 19, was arrested in the 800 block of west Washington Street and is in the Carson City jail on $46,637 bail. According to the arrest report, officers responded to the area for a report of a residential burglary in progress.

Sena Loyd was returning to Carson City Sunday from a holiday trip to Disneyland when she began to take photos of the Bison Fire along Highway 395.

She and Joseph Spencer first saw the smoke 57 miles north of Bishop. As they continued north the smoke became heavier, denser.

"We did not expect to see the fire when we were outside Bishop, when we did we were a bit worried," she said.

Late afternoon winds hampered firefighting efforts against the Bison wildfire in Douglas County, resulting in the loss of an unknown number of commercial structures, officials reported Sunday evening.

The types of buildings involved were not known along with whether the buildings were in active use. No injuries were reported.

UPDATE 6PM: With one agency saying one thing, and another reporting something else, there's bound to be confusion and mistakes. Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center now reports the Bison Fire listed as burning 9,300 acres as stated in its 5:40 p.m. media briefing here.
