Friends and family are struggling to understand what went horribly wrong Saturday night in a quiet Rocklin neighborhood when Robert "Bob" Vickney, Jr. was stabbed to death. Friends say it is the same Bob Vickney Jr., who was born and raised in Carson City.

We are entitled to have opinions about facts, but not to our own facts that are based upon our own opinions.

Recently, I was quite amazed when I was introduced to the Sierra Nevada Forum, a group of local people who organize assemblies to inform the citizens of Carson City about important current issues. The amazing part is that the group finds experts in each field who respond to questions from the Forum and audience and are held firmly to fact-based responses.

Storyteller Jim Cogan will be at the Carson City Library telling tales on Tuesday, July 16 at 6 p.m. This program is free to the public. Jim Cogan offers storytelling venues that appeal to all ages.

Combining history, folklore, legend, family memories and original perspective, Jim takes audiences on an animated and mesmerizing journey through the magical worlds of stories. Mixing creative use of sound with a kaleidoscopic face, adding his animated physical presence in the creation of visual imagery, Jim transforms stories into dramatic, and often hilarious, adventures.

Carson City Health and Human Services is pleased to announce the success of the 2012–13 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Community Outreach Campaign, “Beat the Flu Blues.”

The agency conducted 69 community vaccination clinics that provided more than 10,700 influenza vaccinations throughout the quad-county area of Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties. Our local clinic provided an additional 1,259 flu vaccinations. In all, CCHHS increased the number of flu doses given during the 2012 season by 10 percent.

A Carson City man was arrested and faces charges including domestic battery and gross misdemeanor child abuse after using a pillow to repeatedly beat on his girlfriend in which their baby also sustained a bruise to the face, authorities said.

Miguel Angel Paredes, 23, was arrested at 4:08 a.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Lone Mountain Drive. He faces a gross misdemeanor charge of abuse or neglect of a child, two misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer.

A 29-year-old Carson City man with a history of drug-related arrests, faces a felony trafficking charge after officers found a large bag of meth and drug paraphernalia inside a Cadillac in which he was a passenger.

Kameron Keith Mariolo is being held on $25,756 bail. According to the arrest report, officers assigned to the Special Enforcement Team stopped the Cadillac at around 2:47 p.m. Saturday after it was observed Mariolo was an occupant and it was known he had confirmed warrants for his arrest out of Carson City and Sparks.

On his first airplane ride, Doug Thorngren thought he could glimpse the Earth’s curvature. He was 8 years old, living in Iowa 54 years ago when a pilot flew to town in a J3 Cub. When someone asked who wanted a ride, his hand was the first one in the air.

Here is the Carson City road maintenance and repair report for the week of July 15-21:

Beginning Sunday, July 14, through Friday, July 19, there will be road closures on Fairview Drive during the night hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. due to maintenance. The closures will occur at locations throughout the project limits from Carson Street to just east of Edmonds Drive and detours will be signed.

Due to continued construction of the Carson City Freeway project the following road closures are in effect: (detours are signed)

— Snyder Avenue between E. Roland Street and Center Drive.

Family and friends of Michelle Marie Stratton, who died Wednesday in a crash on Highway 50 near Six Mile Canyon Road, have establish a fund for the woman's young sons.

Stratton, 43, of Dayton Valley died in the crash, which also killed Ellis Erwin, 73, and Louise Erwin, 72, of Dayton.
