Plastic litter is a growing problem around the world, and new research shows that the bottom of Lake Tahoe is no exception. In one of the first studies to utilize scuba divers to collect litter from a lakebed, 673 plastic items were counted from just a small fraction of the lake.

After the season's first significant storm dumped around a foot more of snow in the Sierra and a few inches down into Carson City and surrounding counties, sunny skies with cold temperatures are expected Sunday through Tuesday with another storm by midweek, according to the National Weather Service.

UPDATE 4:54 p.m.: Crashes continue to occur on the freeway and ramps are being closed intermittently to deal with them. There have been over a dozen crashes reported throughout town since 2 p.m.

UPDATE 2:12 p.m.: The freeway is completely backed up due to the multiple crashes. A number of units are being dispatched for traffic control. Avoid the area of the freeway until further notice.

2:05 p.m.: Multiple crashes are now being reported in the area of Eastlake with at least ten vehicles involved.

Responders are reporting the roads are “extremely slick.”
