According to the morning update from Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the TRE Fire burning south of Gardnerville has consumed 4,500 acres, including two homes and 17 outbuildings.

The fire is 10 percent contained, and continues to burn to the northeast. Approximately 120 residences and 300 outbuildings are threatened.

Sunday, May 20 was a memorable day for two of our friends. The two friends are Stephanie Parker (our neighbor) and her brother George, who was visiting our area from Phoenix, Ariz.
Stephanie is fairly new to Carson City and to our neighborhood, having moved here from Las Vegas, where she lived and worked for many years.
When I first discovered that George would be visiting and that he is an ardent fisherman, I asked Stephanie (who also fishes) if the two of them would like to try Mackinaw (Lake) Trout fishing at Lake Tahoe.
Without hesitation, she said, “You bet. Yes, we would!”

Douglas County officials scaled back the number of homes burned in the TRE Fire on Tuesday night to two homes from seven, however, 17 outbuildings were destroyed and the fire burning in south Douglas County at Topaz Ranch Estates has grown to 4,400 acres.
Sgt. Jim Halsey of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office reported the clarification in a news release. The fire continues to move in a northeasterly direction, away from homes in the Topaz Ranch Estates residential area.

Flume Trail Mountain Bikes officially opened for business on May 12th this year. The light winter snowfall has nearly melted off the lower trails, giving access to Marlette Lake and the Flume Trail. A few of us rode the Flume on Saturday, May 12th to go check it out.

CARSON CITY – A proposal by Assemblyman Pat Hickey, R-Reno, to move Nevada’s primary election back to September to shorten the campaign season didn’t get out of the starting gate in 2011.

The Assembly Legislative Operations and Elections Committee held one hearing on Assembly Bill 157, which had cosponsors from both major political parties. But it also saw serious opposition from state election officials and never came up for a vote.

A missing persons report was filed with the Carson City Sheriff's Office at around 9 a.m. Monday for a 90-year-old woman on blood pressure medication. According to the incident report, the missing person - Kitty Webb - has not been found. She was alleged to have last been seen in a white Ford F-150 with Nevada license plates.

More than 350 scientists, environmental policy makers and economic stakeholders will discuss Lake Tahoe and its environmental and economic future at the annual Tahoe Science Conference “Environmental Restoration in a Changing Climate” May 22 to 24 at Incline Village.
The conference, this year being held at Sierra Nevada College, features a scientific poster session and the opening of “Visualizing Change, a photographic exhibition,” on Tuesday evening followed by two full days of seminars and workshops covering more than 20 topics in three main areas:

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested the following individuals on felony allegations:

  • Adam Haney, 22, a Carson City man, at 9 p.m. Saturday at the 2100 block of East William St. Haney was arrested for possession of prescription pills without a prescription (cyclobenzaprine and hydrocodone). Bail has been set at $2,500.
