Prescribed fires are planned beginning Monday at various Lake Tahoe basin locations, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The controlled burns are planned for Kingsbury Grade near North Benjamin in Douglas County, the Logan Creek area; north of Emerald Bay; Kings Beach and McKinney Bay near Homewood.

RENO – From a cheering crowd of several hundred at a brief but energetic Mitt Romney rally to a more subdued event for Rick Santorum hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition to another well-attended rally for Ron Paul, it was a trifecta of presidential candidates in Reno ahead of the Saturday GOP caucus.

Romney got the balling rolling at the Grove, with an estimated 800 supporters packed inside and standing outside the event center in South Reno. Romney spoke briefly to those standing outside before giving a short but enthusiastic speech to those crowded inside.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested Marshall Jaffe, 42, a construction worker from Carson City, at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. Jaffe was arrested for a felony possession of methamphetamines, a misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor resisting arrest with violence, and a misdemeanor driving an unregistered vehicle. The vehicle that Jaffe was driving was impounded. Bail is set at $4,150 plus administrative fees.

Carson City Supervisor Shelly Aldean announced that she will not be seeking reelection to the Ward 2 seat she has held since 2003.

Aldean was appointed to the board in January 2003 after the death of Supervisor Jon Plank. She ran and won elections in 2004 and 2008.

Maurice White, first vice chair of the Carson City Republican Central Committee, plans to announce his intentions to run for the Ward 2 seat at a fundraiser on Feb. 11.

A group of local activists have filed a petition the the county clerk to stop Carson City from using public money on the City Center Project (aka Nugget Project) without getting approval from the voters.

Attorney Day Williams, a long-time opponent of the project, said the group started talking about it last week before filing the paperwork on Friday.

“We filed the petition because the city continues to move forward with this boondoggle,” Williams said.

February 11 is the opening day of the 2012 fishing seasons for the following waters in Lyon County:
01. The Fort Churchill Cooling Ponds, near Wabuska.
02. Applicable open waters (Bass Pond, Beaver Slough, Crappie Pond, Hinkson Slough, North Pond and the Walker River), all on the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area (MVWMA), near Yerington.
All of the waters listed above will close on Sept. 30.

RENO – Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich told a cheering crowd here today that he is the only GOP candidate with the knowledge and experience to get the U.S. back on track after what will be four years of failed policies by President Barack Obama.

Gingrich, a former speaker of the House, is in Nevada ahead of Saturday’s First in the West Republican caucus.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies Kelli Deann Owen-Self, 48, a Dayton woman, for a felony no-bail probation violation at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evening in the 1600 block of Medical Parkway. When the officer arrived, Owen-Self allegedly smelled heavily of alcohol. No bail is set.

At approximately 4 p.m. Tuesday an emergency call was placed from the Warm springs Correctional Facility regarding an officer assaulted by two inmates. The officer was described as having some bleeding but being fully alert. The emergency call was then cancelled.
