A recent report commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Mayors awards Carson City the dubious distinction of being the only metropolitan area studied that is predicted to not recover any jobs this year.

Add to that this morning's unemployment report showing the rate for Carson City climbed to 12.2 percent in December, and one can't help worrying about the economic outlook for our area.

Early Saturday morning, Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested Tammy J. Molthop-Maattala, 48, a Carson City woman, near the 5000 block of Arrowhead Drive. Molthop-Maattala was arrested for a misdemeanor domestic battery, and two felonies - a probation and parole violation and assault with a deadly weapon.

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s unemployment rate fell by four-tenths of a percentage point to 12.6 percent in December, the second consecutive monthly decline that saw the number of jobless drop to 166,300, a state agency reported today.

A year ago, the rate, which is adjusted for seasonal fluctuations in the labor market, hit a record high of 14.9 percent.

The new film "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" by director Stephen Daldry ("The Hours") playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City a story about a 9-year old boy Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) who loses his father in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. He suffers perhaps from Asperger's and a clear case of overwhelming anxiety.

The sci-fi-horror film "Underworld Awakened" screening at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City is the fourth iteration of the series, in this case starring Kate Beckinsale as Selene for the third time.

Selene hs been in suspended animation in a freezer for 12 years bust breaks out to find that humankind is at war with the vampires in the population a well as the werewolves.

Well, she isn't going to sit still for this and with super athleticism leaps off buildings and bumps of a bunch of cop-soldiers (hard to tell them apart but they all have machine guns).

CARSON CITY – Nearly 250 capital city Democrats took time out today to participate in the party caucus, supporting President Barack Obama in a process that held no surprises for the party faithful.

The caucus at the Carson City Middle School was one of 118 held around Nevada today as the state Democrat Party gears up for the 2012 election.

Rain is falling in the valley areas this morning, including the area burned by the Washoe Drive Fire. There is no official word yet on if the fire has been contained or extinguished, which should come later today.

Both lanes of Highway 395 reopened last night after 11 p.m., with National Guard troops standing guard at the entrances of neighborhoods where homes were damaged or destroyed.

Fire officials at a news conference this evening in Reno said the Washoe Drive Fire totally destroyed 29 dwellings and damaged five others, burning a total of 3,177 acres. The fire is 65 percent contained.

They also said that a person has come forward claiming he improperly disposed of fireplace ashes, which started the blaze.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety says that U.S. Highway 395 may reopen after 10 p.m. tonight after crews worked all days repairing damage to make the roads safe.
