RENO – President Barack Obama made a brief stopover here today, visiting with a couple who refinanced their home through a White House initiative helping underwater homeowners who have government-backed loans.

After meeting with Paul and Valerie Keller, Obama urged Congress to expand the Home Affordable Refinancing Program (HARP) to other mortgages as well.

It started off with a grand $90 million vision. Then it shrank to $50 million. Now, the Carson City Center Project, aka Nugget Project, looks like it got downsized again, this time to $28 million.

According to the agenda for the May 17 Board of Supervisors meeting, the board will consider directing City Manager Larry Werner to draft a ballot question asking voters to approve a quarter cent sales tax increase to finance the $28 million project.

What got cut? Mainly the parking garage.

Last Sunday May 6th was Bike Habitat‘s Tour of Carson, an annual event that this year celebrates the shop’s 5th anniversary in business! The Tour of Carson began in 2008 as a way for the shop to say thank you to its customers and the community for their support. The event begins with a 27-30 mile ride around the perimeter of Carson City, and then finishes back at the Bike Habitat for a BBQ.

CARSON CITY – They have names like “A Better Nevada PAC”, “A Bolder Nevada” and “The Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus”.

They are all political action committees formed or renewed by state lawmakers this year to help promote their parties, push their candidates and protect their ranks in an effort to maintain and/or win control of the Assembly and Senate.

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s casino winnings took a tumble in March after two strong months in 2012, dropping 10.9 percent compared to March 2011, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reported today.

The decline was led by Clark County markets, including the Las Vegas Strip, which was down 14.9 percent over March 2011.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrested the following people for felony allegations:

  • Jaime Rosaschi, 49, a Carson City man, at about 2 p.m. Wednesday. Rosaschi was arrested for attempted burglary and attempted larceny, as well as a misdemeanor allegation of evading arrest. Bail is set at $23,000.
  • Jeremy Weedmark, 26, a Carson City man, at about 2 p.m. Wednesday. Weedmark was arrested for attempted burglary and attempted larceny. Bail is set at $22,500.

CASA of Carson City will hold an Information Hour on May 21, 5:30pm, at the CASA of Carson City office, 1539 E. 5th St. Carson City. CASA volunteers are appointed for to speak up for the best interest of children removed from their parents custody due to abuse or neglect. Being a CASA volunteer requires research, communication, patience and caring. It is rewarding and challenging. CASA volunteers make a difference for kids.

Celebrating National Train Day, the Nevada State Railroad Museum’s historic 1910 McKeen motor car will ride the rails from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 12 in Carson City.

Now a stellar attraction for rail enthusiasts and family fun, the McKeen Motor car operated from 1910 to 1945 racking up more than a half-million miles between Reno and Minden. The prestigious car became a diner and an office but was rescued by the museum when it was donated by the Bernhard family of Carson City in 1995.

But the backers of the Carson City Center Project, aka Nugget Project, are going to have to hope they can pull off a miracle two-fer.
