U.S. Supreme Court Reverses Nevada High Court, Upholds Nevada’s Ethics Law

CARSON CITY – The U.S. Supreme Court today upheld Nevada’s ethics law in a case involving a Sparks city councilman. The opinion reversed a ruling by the Nevada Supreme Court.
The court, in an 11-page opinion written by Justice Antonin Scalia, said Nevada’s ethics law does not impinge on elected officials’ free speech rights by imposing limits on when they can vote on public matters because of conflicts of interest.

Gov. Sandoval Announces Appointment Of New Administration Department Director

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today announced he has appointed Jeff Mohlenkamp as director of the Department of Administration effective July 11.
“I am pleased to announce that Jeff has agreed to join the team and lead the Department of Administration,” Sandoval said. “With more than 20 years of experience in state government, Jeff’s depth and breadth of experience across several agencies will be a strong asset to both my office and the department as a whole.”

Escapee from juvenile detention apprehended

A 17-year-old runaway from California who escaped from the juvenile detention facility at 5th & Saliman on Saturday morning was apprehended about an hour later, after he allegedly broke into a home and stole clothes and a cell phone.

Free Film Series at the Brewery Arts Center Begins Friday

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City and ACCtv will launch a new Friday Films Series on June 17. The family friendly fun begins with a five week series of short films for children. Admission is free. All showings are at 6:30pm in the Performance Hall.

A Humbling Experience

Nevada Legislature: Another dirty tale of sausage making

Last week, I wrote about how the pressures of the final hours of the Nevada Legislature result in lots of bad lawmaking. Today, Anjeanette Damon details some really odious bits of sausage making, including a measure to benefit NV Energy that could cost rate payers $1 billion.

This episode supports the contention that the 120-day session limit makes for very bad legislating. Limiting the number of days the Legislature meets does not limit the mischief that can cause. It simply gives the lobbyists and inside wheeler-dealers all the power, while shutting out the public.

Lincecum roughed up by Reds as Leake shuts down Giants

SAN FRANCISCO- AT&T Park 'magic' took a day off as the San Francisco Giants' (36-29) ace Tim Lincecum (5-5) was chewed up and spit out by the Cincinnati Reds (34-32) who beat the Giants 10-2 on Saturday afternoon in front of 41,725 fans at AT&T Park (30th consecutive sell-out). Lincecum failed to record an out in the fifth inning in which he was relieved by Guillermo Mota.

Flood warning issued for Walker River areas of Lyon County including Yerington and Mason Valley

Rising temperatures and rapid snow melt has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a flood warning for the main stem of the Walker Rivers in Lyon County, which includes Mason Valley, Yerington and Wabuska.

Thousands attend Carson City Rendezvous; event continues through Sunday

With enough cannon fire, frontier food and Wild West living history to pack a weekend's worth of activities, the 28th annual Carson City Rendezvous continues today, tonight and through Sunday at Mills Park in Carson City.

The Carson City Rendezvous is noted for portraying the lifestyle of early Nevada settlers, with a host of gun skirmishes, mountain man encampments and trapping demonstrations. This year the main demonstration of the Civil War-era gun battles has been moved from afternoon to dusk to better capture the backdrop of live-fire, rounds shot from muskets and cannons.
