CARSON CITY – Officials with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services put out the word today that a new affordable health insurance plan is available for Nevadans with pre-existing medical conditions.
The plan, offered through the new federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, will serve as a bridge to cover this group of people between today and Jan. 1, 2014, when the major provisions of the law take effect, said Herb Shultz, regional director of HHS for Nevada.

CARSON CITY – Nevada ranks 46th among states in the total amount of federal subsidy payments to farmers and ranchers over the past 16 years, with 89 percent receiving no payments at all, according to information from the Washington, DC-based Environmental Working Group.

On Monday, July 4, several Northern Nevada law enforcement officers will team up for a sobriety checkpoint at Lake Tahoe. Personnel from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Sparks Police Department, Washoe County School District Police Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol will be staffing the checkpoint on July 4, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen in a news release.

CARSON CITY — Senate Bill 140, which was passed this year during the 2011 Legislative Session and signed by Governor Brian Sandoval on June 17, goes into effect Oct. 1, 2011. This new law prohibits the use of a cellular phone or other handheld wireless communications device while operating a motor vehicle in certain circumstances. This is a primary law which means that officers do not need to observe a separate violation before initiating a traffic enforcement stop.

Carson City Deputies arrested one man and another male they think might be a juvenile for
allegedly taking two girls, 11 and 12 years old, from MIlls Park and sexually assaulting near the Carson River Tuesday night.

Enrique Lopez-Cervantes, 24, and another male whose identification showed he is 17, were arrested Wednesday night after detectives found them at Mills Park.
