Nevada Department of Wildlife Director Tony Wasley announced Monday he will retire effective December 2022, ending an over 25-year tenure with the agency. For the last nearly 10 years, Wasley has served as the agency’s director.

CARSON CITY — The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest welcomes Duncan Leao as the Deputy District Ranger for the Carson Ranger District. In his new position, Leao will assist the District Ranger in overseeing staff and resources needed to manage over 400,000 acres of National Forest System lands in the eastern front of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, straddling the Nevada and California border.

CARSON CITY — The Carson Water Subconservancy District, a multi-county and bi-state agency promoting cooperative action in the Carson River Watershed, has launched its November Watershed Moment public service announcement “Engage In Your Watershed” which highlights how volunteerism and citizen involvement can improve the health and water quality of the Carson River Watershed.

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis has released economic data for 2021 highlighting the powerful and positive economic impact the outdoor recreation sector has on Nevada’s economy and the U.S. economy overall.

As part of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s hazardous fuels reduction efforts, both Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts’ fire crews will conduct pile burning beginning in November through May, weather and fuel conditions permitting.

With the National Weather Service forecast calling for two to four feet of snow expected by Wednesday above 7,000 feet and ideal temperatures for snowmaking operations to be in full swing, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe announced Monday its plans to open this Friday, Nov. 11 through Sunday, Nov. 13 for skiers and riders to make their first turns of the season.

The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team will continue prescribed fire operations this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Conditions and weather permitting, California State Parks, Nevada Division of Forestry, North Lake Tahoe, and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts will be burning piles in several locations around Lake Tahoe.

On Saturday, November 12, 2022, Capitol City Gun Club in Carson City will host a Veterans Day Weekend Fun Shoot from 9:00am to 4:30pm. Target fees will be discounted all day. Everyone is invited to come!

As Lake Tahoe watercraft inspections shift to winter operations, inspectors report intercepting far fewer vessels this year with aquatic invasive species onboard. They credit improvements to the program as part of the reason.

The Tahoe Fund announced Tuesday the start of ‘Plates for Powder,’ an annual program that offers free skiing opportunities to those who purchase a Lake Tahoe license plate. Proceeds from plate sales and renewals support environmental improvement projects in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The gate on Ash Canyon Road, located approximately one mile above the Ash Canyon water tanks at the trailhead to the Ash to Kings Trail in Ash Canyon, will be closed starting Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022.

Christmas tree permits for National Forest System lands on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Bridgeport and Carson Ranger Districts will be available for purchase online through Recreation.gov, as well as in-person at multiple locations, starting Tuesday, Nov. 1.

I have a longtime friend, Michael Janik, who is a fruit tree expert for our area. He has a collection orchard in northern Nevada containing 100 varieties of apples, a dozen stone fruits, currants, raspberries and grapes.

INCLINE VILLAGE — Halloween is coming to Sand Harbor State Park! Dress in your best costume and join park staff on Friday, October 28 for a night of trick-or-treating after dark. The spooktacular evening begins with a Halloween movie in the park at 5:30 p.m., followed by trick-or-treating.

With the dropping temperatures around Lake Tahoe, and a change in humidity, Vail Resorts began making snow at Northstar over the weekend. Snowmaking operations at Heavenly and Kirkwood within the week.

I asked for daffodil bulbs for my birthday this year. Since my date is in August, the bulbs came just a couple of weeks ago, which is perfect. I have been waiting for some cold weather before planting them, because I don’t want them to start growing now. With the recent freezing nights, I’m ready to plant!

Amidst the coolers, umbrellas and towels, there was an unfamiliar sight on Lake Tahoe’s beaches this summer — a blue, picnic table-sized machine outfitted with tank treads and solar panels, quietly sifting tiny pieces of trash out of the sand.
