Carson City road report for week of Dec. 23-29

Road projects will be minimal over the Christmas week, Dec. 23-29, according to Carson City Public Works.

There will be tree removal Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 23-24, that will close the roads on Division Street between West John and West William streets from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Detours will be marked.

Weather service cautions about black ice on roadways north of Carson City

Scattered freezing rain overnight, mainly north of Carson City and in the Sierra, has left some roads coated with black ice, the National Weather Service advises.

Pockets of black ice will melt off during the next few hours. Travelers along the Highway 395 corridor from Reno to Susanville and Highways 49 and 70 through the Sierra Valley should use caution while driving, especially on bridges and overpasses, the weather service states.

Mile High Jazz Band features 'Cool Jazz in January' at Comma Coffee

Swing into the New Year with the Mile High Jazz Band at "Cool Jazz in January," a big-band event with vocalist Sheryl Adams at Comma Coffee on Tuesday, January 14, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, is across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. General admission is $5 at the door: free for age 18 and under.

New department store, restaurant coming to Carson Mall

Carson Mall will be getting a new Bealls department store to fill part of the space left by the departure of Gottschalks four years ago.

Joanna Holmes, property manager for the Carrington Company that owns the mall, confirmed that Bealls will be occupying 24,268 square feet of the mall, and that demolition work is already underway to ready the space for the new store.

Bealls is owned by Stage Stores, Inc., of Houston, Texas.

Work is already underway for the new Sportsman's Warehouse store announced in August.

Every year the Carson City Sheriff's Office respond to reports of juveniles drinking at residences. Often these calls come in due to the music playing too loud, vehicles being parked illegally or a disturbance has broken out.

Bomb threat at Moneytree off East William Street in Carson City prompts evacuation

UPDATE: The Moneytree located in a shopping center on East William Street near the Carson City I80 freeway was evacuated as were nearby businesses and the Subway restaurant after a bomb threat was made Friday afternoon. The shopping center is now open.

According to Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Mike Cullen, the Money Tree store was searched and cleared of any explosive device. Detectives are following up with additional searches and taking photographs of the building.

Nevada health officials urge flu precautions over holidays

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urge all that if you have not gotten your flu vaccination yet this season, now is the time. In addition, and especially with the abundance of holiday activities, it is important to take additional measures to prevent getting or spreading disease.
