Get out your lucky hat, because the Proscenium Players in conjunction with the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino in Carson City is about to unveil a mystery dinner show that spoofs the movie “Casablanca” and the American dream of winning the jackpot. Penned by Tony Schwartz and Marylou Ambrose, the show, "Dealt a Deadly Hand: Murder at the Carson City Casino Royale," takes place at Rick’s club, the first legal gambling casino in Carson City. Rick dreams of striking it rich – then two crafty Native Americans try to claim the land and his gold-digging ex-wife Lola shows up.

Crime Log: Carson City man arrested for felony warrant out of California

It was a relatively quiet weekend for crime in Carson City, with only one felony arrest.

Joel David Germain, 42, of Carson City, was arrested early Sunday morning in the 700 block of Hot Springs Road on a felony warrant out of California, and for failing to register as an ex-felon, a misdemeanor. He was held without bail.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies also arrested three persons for first offense driving under the influence, in three separate incidents.

UNR uses new tech to record Antarctic Ocean, ice temperatures

RENO, Nev. – Half-mile long thermometers have been dropped through the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica that will give the world relevant data on sea and ice temperatures for tracking climate change and its effect on the glacial ice surrounding the continent. The study based at the University of Nevada, Reno is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Office of Polar Programs and other NSF grants.

Road Report for Dec. 19-25

Due to a project to complete a new north-south water transmission line on the east side of Carson City, there will be lane closures with flaggers in the vicinity of the roundabout at the intersection of Fifth Street and Fairview Drive, Monday through Thursday. Delays are expected.

There will be work at the following locations as a result of the Freeway Landscaping Project. No closures are expected.

  • North Carson Street, in the vicinity of the freeway overpass.
  • Arrowhead Drive between North Carson Street and Garnet Way.

Remembering the fallen, and moving on

Echos of gunshots from Eduardo Sencion had barely subsided when the chatter began that the Carson City IHOP would never open again, forever tarnished by a gunman's murderous rampage.

But this week the IHOP did reopen, with the governor, mayor and sheriff in attendance to reassure residents that we will not let the acts of a madman control our lives, that we can put this tragic episode behind us.
