Man with revoked license arrested for meth after traffic stop at Carson City DMV
A 47-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, driving on a revoked license and drug paraphernalia, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report.
Benjamin Amos Smith, listed as being from Sparks, was taken into custody at 8:43 p.m. in the driveway of the Nevada DMV, 555 Wright Way in Carson City.
According to the booking report, a deputy made a traffic stop after observing a driver abruptly hit his brakes, activated his turn signal at the same time, turning north onto South Roop Street and then failed to signal for a minimum of 100 feet prior to making a turn. The report notes there was motoring traffic at the intersection of Fairview and South Roop when the deputy observed the traffic violation.
The officer also turned onto South Roop Street and followed the vehicle, which turned onto Oregon Street. This area has no open businesses and leads to the parking lot of the DMV, which was closed. The officer observed the driver driving with "distance behavior" which happens when an individual, who is or may be involved in criminal activity, quickly tries to distance themselves from law enforcement.
The deputy made the traffic stop in the area of the parking lot of the DMV and made contact with the driver. He stated he was looking for a "76" station and was speaking to someone via cell phone upon contact. When checking the status of the man driver's license, the deputy learned his license had been revoked. A records search showed the man to have a DUI in 2021 and a failure to appear warrant dated April 2, 2023. He was arrested.
The driver asked if he could make a phone call for someone to retrieve the vehicle. The deputy asked if there was anything illegal inside and the man stated no, the report states.
During a search, the deputy located a non-used methamphetamine pipe inside a backpack on the passenger seat. Inside a metal clipboard, the deputy also located a broken glass pipe with burn residue. Under the driver's seat, the deputy located a plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine and a "Crown Royal" bag containing a methamphetamine pipe. Bail: $4,274.
