Sierra Nevada Forums to host discussion on educational curriculum October 17

Sierra Nevada Forums, in partnership with the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, to host "Carson City School Curriculum: How is it decided and implemented?"

The next forums will take place October 17 with doors opening at 5:30 p.m., and the program starting at 6 p.m. in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall located at 511 W King St in Carson City.

Presenters include:

  • Ann Marie Dickson, Deputy Superintendent, State Department of Education
  • Tasha Fuson, Assistant Superintendent, Carson City School District
  • Cheryl Macy, Director of Equity in Curriculum and Instruction
  • Mike Walker, Carson City School Board member
  • Susan Hoffman, Moderator

The forum focuses on how the curriculum is decided and implemented within the Carson City School District. Following a 15-minute overview by each speaker, the Forum will open up to written questions from members of the audience.

Candidate forums returned to Carson City last week, and are continuing in the series hosted by Sierra Nevada Forums, the League of Women Voters, the Nevada Appeal, and KUNR.

During the first forum held at the Brewery Arts Center, the two candidates for Carson City mayor discussed a number of topics including affordable housing, sustainability, growth, the master plan, and more.

A suspect who allegedly made violent threats against an elementary school in Sonoma County, Calif. was arrested at Lake Tahoe on Monday evening. Earlier in the day, detectives with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect, Kevin Harrington, 47, of Santa Rosa, was likely in the South Lake Tahoe area.

A presentation called "Going for the Gold Lake Tahoe and the Olympics" will be featured Sunday, Oct. 20 at the Minden Mill. The program begins at 1 p.m.

Celebrity comedian Alex Elkin is performing at the Carson Nugget this Saturday, Oct. 19 with two shows at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Four-legged heroes representing law enforcement agencies from throughout the region will shine Saturday, Oct. 19 as the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host its third annual K9 Unit Challenge and public K9 obstacle course at Fuji Park.

As part of American Archives Month, the Nevada State Archives unveiled an exhibit highlighting the Nevada Division of Forestry’s (NDF) essential role in protecting and managing Nevada’s lands. The exhibit opened to the public Oct. 1 and will run through Dec. 31 at the Nevada State Archives in Carson City.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department invites the community to an evening of family fun at the 8th Annual Carson City BOOnanza event on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mills Park, 1111 E. William St.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded early Tuesday evening to a vehicle crash involving a motorcycle near Classy Seconds at Brown and Gordon Street near US-50 East. No serious injuries were reported.

In September, the national Big Lots company announced they would be closing over 340 stores. Now, Carson City’s Big Lots, which has been in its south Carson location since 2010, has announced it will be shuttering its doors Dec. 22.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Thursday, Oct, 17 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William St.

A 54-year-old woman was arrested Monday for suspicion of DUI second offense and other offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

In a letter shared on their website and social media, owners of Homewood Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe announced they will be unable to open for the 2024/25 season for financial reasons, but the community says it is more than that.

This past weekend, nearly two dozen members of Carson High School’s (CHS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), along with their advisors, took part in a community service project at Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe. The group spent the afternoon collecting garbage along the shoreline and in surrounding areas, contributing to the preservation of the natural beauty of the popular destination.

Carson City resident Brett Fisher took these photos of the rare celestial visitor Comet A3, also known as C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, that arrived this week over the skies across Nevada and throughout the world.

A gas leak was repaired Thursday and there is not an active leak, according to a Southwest Gas spokesman. It is unknown at this time when the portion of backcountry trail will reopen. We will update when it does.

A portion of the Spooner Lake State Park backcountry is closed until further notice due to an ongoing gas leak, according to Nevada State Parks in a social media post Monday.

It will begin to feel more like fall later this week around Carson City and surrounding counties with a storm system arriving Wednesday that is expected to bring cooler temperatures and shower chances.

Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing Thursday night into Friday morning, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a freeze watch.
