Carson City Planning Commission to discuss new cannabis dispensary on Highway 50 East
On Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, the Carson City Planning Commission will discuss whether or not to approve a Special Use Permit for a new cannabis dispensary near the intersection of Highway 50 E. and Airport Road.
The Planning Commission meeting will be held at the Carson City Community Center beginning at 5 p.m.
Currently, there are two dispensaries operating within city limits and two dispensaries just outside the city: one in Washoe Valley, and one in Mound House.
In September 2022, Supervisors approved expanding the number of allowed cannabis dispensaries from two to four. This decision was brought on by an application from Qualcan LLC., who asked for an ordinance revision as well as a Special Use Permit to create a third dispensary within Carson.
While their application was ultimately approved, Qualcan never carried through on their permit and the dispensary number remains at two in Carson City.
Now GTI Nevada, LLC. is requesting a special use permit to establish a new 4,500 square foot dispensary within an existing 5,500 square foot retail building located at 3060 Highway 50 E., which is zoned General Commercial.
GTI Nevada, LLC. (Green Thumb Industries) is the Chicago-based owner of RISE, one of Carson City’s dispensaries, and previously owned Sierra Well / Sierra Wellness, which has since been acquired and changed to Zen Leaf, owned by Verano Holdings, also of Chicago.
Zen Leaf is currently located at 2765 Highway 50, which is only 0.2 miles from the new GTI proposed location.
There are a number of conditions that must be applied and include a limitation of operating hours, signage, products being viewable from outside, and more.
