Carson High School debate season starts with a bang

Carson High Debate kicked off the new season coming off their trip to nationals in June. The team would like to thank the following supporters for funding the team’s trip including: Carson City Host Lions, Sassafras, TSBP LLC, Carson City Toyota, Associated Risk Management, Hanifin's Arts, William Cutbert, Karen ALlen, and Stephanie Dutton.

This season’s first tournament was held at Robert McQueen High School. 15 school and 170 competitors participated in the two day event. 19 members of the Carson High squad presented in 10 different events. In speech events Carson remains a dominant force in Program Oral Interpretation claiming 4th, 2nd, & 1st in novice and 2nd in senior.

Pebble Wiggins took 4th with her piece on the lasting harms of sexual Assault. Summer McGill finished 2nd speaking on dementia and first time competitor Makayla Heyder finished 1st with her program examining the pressure of being the first born child. In senior level competition Emily Tran finished 2nd presented her piece on the fetishization of Asian American women. Carson High also had a strong showing in humorous interpretation.

New members Kayden Kemp and Ellie Dement took 1st and 2nd in the novice division with their pieces on the Retirement of Spiderman and Sherman and Peabody. Addison Hopkins finished 3rd overall in senior humorous interpretation presenting his cutting of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Captain Viviana Castro took 2nd place overall in senior original oratory with her piece examining problems veterans face.

In debate events Gaven Hettrick claimed 10th overall in speaker points in novice Public Forum debating US military presence in the Arctic. Kaden Sa placed 8th in policy speaker points with his partner Nasia Perkins taking 4th debating fiscal redistribution. Viviana Castro took 3rd in senior Lincoln Douglas speaker points.

In novice Lincoln Douglas Emily Tran finished 1st in speaker points and 3rd overall with captain Kyle Allen taking 3rd in speaker points and sweeping the final round to finish 1st place overall debating the right to housing.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is attempting to locate a missing person.

Sharon Contreras (DOB:03/30/88) was last seen around the Carson City Courthouse and was reported missing by friends.

A two vehicle crash has closed down 5th Street from Curry to Nevada streets as of 3:50 p.m. Friday.

One vehicle reportedly ran a stop sign and struck another vehicle.

At 4 p.m. a crash was reported in the intersection of Highway 50 E and Saliman.

No injures are reported but traffic is blocked. Two vehicles collided with one towing a trailer. The trailer is reported to be tipped over in the intersection.

A Churchill County Sheriff’s deputy received a letter of commendation after his actions ultimately saved a juvenile’s life.

The inaugural Healing in Harmony Festival will be coming to Carson City Saturday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Warren Elliott went missing Friday afternoon while going for a walk after doing trail rehab work ahead of the Jeep Jamboree along the Rubicon 4x4 trail. Since then, up to 100 searchers a day from 10 agencies from across the state have been looking for the 70-year-old man.

Our Pet of the Week is Tyson! Tyson is a seven-year-old pup who is cute as a button. We are not quite sure why he is still here with us because he really is a PERFECT pet - he loves people, has lived with kids and cats, was housetrained previously, enjoys walks, and rides well in the car. Heavy rain and thunderstorms prompted the National Weather Service to issue Wednesday a Flash Flood Warning for Douglas County.

With threats of heavy rain and thunderstorms Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch for Carson City and surrounding counties. Douglas County is already under a flash flood warning.

Carson City School Board trustees approved a new proposed policy Tuesday regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the district, and discussed implementation tactics for educators.

The purpose of the policy is to develop guidance on how to “responsibly embrace” AI as it can be a “powerful tool and partner in the learning process.”

Registration is open for Carson City Symphony's after-school string instrument instruction and youth chorus programs. Classes will begin in September at five locations in Carson City.
