Comment on Stabbing at Hwy 50E after hours dance hall by Dave Morgan
Well Kowalski I feel your angst, but law enforcement can’t just crash a party unless they have probable cause that a crime is being commited. Due process and equal protection guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution determines the cops’ behavior. If they had sufficient information that illegal activities were going on there and they actually saw illegal activity, that would be one thing. But absent that, the right to assemble and travel are both guaranteed to be out of the purview of the cops. The way the stabbing went down it doesn’t sound at all like it was between two gang members. It’s more like a typical disagreement between drunk people, except one of them grabbed a butcher knife (the place is a meat market during normal business hours). If any business establishment has too many fights, or is linked to too many drug deals their business license can be yanked. A latino dance club on E. Winnie I believe was shut down for a time because of repeated calls to break up fights.
