Volunteers Needed

Do you love meeting new people? AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Volunteers will be providing free tax preparation services at the Carson City Senior Center on Mondays and Wednesdays from February 5th through April 10th in 2024. We need a Receptionist two Screeners (“Client Facilitators”), and Tax Counselors.

This weekend July 17-18, 400 runners from all over America will be in Carson City for the 20th Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs — 104 mile, 52 mile and 55K trail running race.

Heading into the weekend and inching closer to Thanksgiving, there’s a number of activities around the Carson City region. The fourth annual Carson Valley Turkey Trot begins Friday and will be held virtually throughout the month of November. Combined with live music and Open Mic Night at A to Zen, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

Carson Ridge Disc Golf Course work day on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m. Meet at the course parking lot at Flint Drive and Rifle Range Road. There will be planned tasks for different levels of physical ability. All volunteers will receive a Carson Ridge Shield Decal.

The ARW is a citizen workgroup that reviews and recommends grant applications to be funded by the Carso City Community Development Block Grant and Community Support Services Grant programs.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is seeking individuals who are interested in volunteering as NRA Range Safety Officers. These volunteers will supervise participants at the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range to ensure safe practices and procedures.

How many students ever apply to participate in a contest, let alone actually do it and win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th place? For that matter, how many adults say they are going to write a book one day, paint like Michelangelo, or seek discomfort, my own personal new year’s resolution, by learning something new, performing selfless endeavors, or fulfilling an item on their bucket list?

The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.

The Carson City School District is seeking one (1) more application from a parent to serve as a member on the district’s Family Life Committee. An initial request for four (4) applications was made a month ago in October, and the district was able to appoint three (3) new members of the committee; however, the school district is still needing to fill one more seat.

Carson High and Douglas High teaming up together is right up there with the appearing of Halley’s Comet. Officially designated 1P/Halley, this is a short-period comet visible from Earth every 75–76 year and is the only known short-period comet that is visible to the naked eye from Earth and the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime.

The Carson City School District is seeking four applications from parents to serve as board members on the district’s Family Life Committee. Appointment as a member of the committee shall be for an initial term of three years.

CARSON CITY — As the district works on aligning workforce preparedness efforts under the Work-Based Learning umbrella, community partners will have more opportunities to share information with students including career exploration, preparation and training.

Carson City Parks and Recreation staff met Tuesday with the Eagle Valley Disc Golf Association to identify the remaining work tasks to complete the Disc Golf Course Complex Project, according to Vern Krahn, senior park planner.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will host its first ever volunteer post Nevada Day Clean-Up on Oct. 28, 2018 from 8 to 10 a.m. The department will provide all of the trash bags and gloves necessary for the clean up.

The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada is seeking volunteers to assist with the installation of smoke alarms in Gardnerville area homes on Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs) are a national network of volunteers, staff and partners. They provide free, in depth, one-on-one insurance counseling and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, friends, and caregivers.

You can probably scratch ‘hitting the slopes’ off this weekend’s list of options, but you can hit the ‘hill’ instead: Prison Hill, to be exact. Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. With all the motorcycles on the road, you may be looking for some peace and quiet. Luckily, it’s fee-free day at all of the Nevada State Parks. Load up the kids, pack a picnic, at head to the great outdoors. Don’t miss out on the last-of-the-season Farmers Market at Third and Curry, stock up on local honey and load your basket with yummy stuff. Oktoberfest takes over the McFadden Plaza at 3 p.m. Bavarian and German beers, authentic food, and live music await. Keep reading for everything the area has to offer.

The Reading Partners Program in Carson City is seeking volunteers to read with elementary students throughout the school year. Volunteers may choose their own volunteer days, times, and school, and may commit to as little as one hour per week during the school year.

It’s Tuesday, and that means it’s time to explore another one of Carson City’s great walking trails with Parks and Recreation. The Ambrose Carson River nature area in on the list for today, so grab some water and sunscreen and enjoy the fresh air. Learn about CASA, and what they do for the children of our valley, during an informal meet-and-greet at San Rafael Coffee. It’s all hands on deck for the Deputy Howell Memorial Music Festival; a meeting for the volunteers is tonight at Battle Born Harley Davidson. Grab your cowboy boots and head out to Carson Lanes for line dance lessons.

Did you ever want to help children in foster care? To be a voice for a child who cannot speak up on their own? What about just helping children in your community, letting them know that they are wanted and that there is a person (YOU!) who listens to them and advocates for their best interests?

Bet your bottom dollar that it will be a great weekend. Wild Horse Children’s Theater finishes up its spring production of ‘Annie, Jr: The Musical,’ so don’t miss your chance to catch these talented kids on stage. Muscle Powered will be out and about for their monthly Trash Mob and invite you to help clean up a little corner of our valley. The Annual Polar Plunge at Zephyr Cove is a brave way to help the Special Olympics raise money, and the costumes get wilder every year. Keep reading and enjoy the weather before the clouds return.

It may be a Monday, but it gets us closer to one of my favorite festivities: the Nevada Day Parade. The holidays come rolling along quickly after that. For those who need some help this Thanksgiving, you can sign up for a food basket at the Salvation Army. A Holiday Craft Show at Browsers Corner Bookstore will give you a head start on that gift list; consider a Friends of the Carson City Library Membership for your more bookish friends. The World Championship doesn’t begin until tomorrow, so get your sports fix with the Texans/Broncos match-up in tonight’s Monday Night Football game.

Tuesday has arrived, and that means a new stroll with Carson City Parks and Recreation. Today's Easy Walk is the Annual Art Tour, visiting eight galleries and exhibits downtown. If you can't join them on this excursion, just grab the new art walk map at the Carson Visitor's Center to make sure you don't miss anyone. Today also marks the beginning of the Nevada Day Treasure Hunt, an annual tradition that has history buffs and Nevada aficionados combing the grounds for the lucky medallion.
