As our state faces horrific effects from the recent global outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, our thoughts and prayers go out to all of our fellow Nevadans. Together we must stand united, stay positive, and support our fellow neighbors.

Throughout our 156 year history we have encountered floods, fires, mass shootings, recessions, and other disasters, and yet here we are taking on this latest challenge with creative ways while respecting social distance.

Heading into the weekend, activities abound around the Carson City region over the next three days. We should note you'll want to check ahead of time in case of cancellations.

Spend Friday and Saturday, March 13-14 with Mike Thomas as he provides a good UFO story and history lesson in a war that took place in Nevada in 1860.

CARSON CITY — The storm’s coming, and Travel Nevada invites all naruto runners to take part in the Area 51 Intergalatic Scavenger Hunt (Area 51-ISH) this fall. Find and get Unidentified Free Objects (UFOs) and other spacy swag on Nevada’s Extraterrestrial Highway and in surrounding communities of Tonopah, Caliente and Pioche.

That’s no UFO, it’s the Oakland A’s top minor league team that will land in the Reno Aces’ division next season.

Oakland’s Triple-A squad is leaving Tennessee after four seasons. It will drop one clever name – Nashville Sounds – for another: Las Vegas 51s. Baseball fans in Reno will now have more opportunities to see the top minor league teams of the two closest big league teams, Oakland and San Francisco.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — In an intergalactic outreach campaign, the Nevada Division of Tourism has created a travel itinerary suited to the possible extraterrestrial life forms identified in the $22 million Defense Department program described in a Dec. 16 New York Times article.

Finally, Nevada Day weekend is here. State offices are closed, the kids are off school, and Carson City is hoppin’. Join the Downtown Business Association for the ‘Passport to Downtown’ with live music, a raffle, craft and vendor show, and a family fun center, complete with petting zoo. Stick around for the annual fall Blinky Man Costumed Nighttime Bike Ride Pub Crawl with Lights. Halloween festivities, a carnival in Mills Park, and opening night of the La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow are on today’s list, as well.

If you happen to be up very early on Saturday morning, you may just see some runners in the pre-dawn hours. The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile relay, passes through Carson City on its way to Virginia City. A huge congratulations goes out to the Class of 2017; the Carson High graduates will get their diplomas today. It’s wine walk weekend, so downtown will be hopping with sippers, strollers, and plenty of summer fun. Keep reading, and you’re sure to find something to make this weekend special.

Historian and lecturer Mike Thomas will talk on “The Roswell UFO Incident” on Saturday, Sept 10 at Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College.

Unidentified Flying Objects and man’s migration to space are topics of discussion at the Western Nevada College Jack C. Davis Observatory in the coming weeks.

Historian and lecturer Mike Thomas will talk on “Colonizing Space” on Saturday, Aug. 13. Learn about the U.S. space plans for the eventual exodus of mankind to new worlds.

The next installment of the Mike Thomas Lecture Series is "The Roswell UFO Incident" at the Plaza Hotel, Friday, July 8 at 7pm. Doors will open at 6:30pm, the lecture will cost $5 and light appetizers will be served.

Grab the kids, the carnival has come to town! Take a look at the skies while you’re atop the Ferris Wheel. Today is World UFO Day. Nevada has a reputation for its many UFO sightings, so if the clouds aren’t in the way, you may just see some strange lights. July 2nd was chosen because of the Roswell Incident in 1947.
