With the first day of school fast approaching, August 19, Carson City School District wants all students and parents to be aware of some important back-to-school information, event dates and the electronics policy at Carson High School effective this year.

Heading into Tuesday Aug. 6, which means the safest family celebration of the year at the 17th annual Carson City National Night Out. This is an event like no other, where agencies who work in areas of public health and safety gather at Mills Park to meet with Carson City residents. This event features 3 hours of information booths, games, demonstrations, food and fun. Also happening Tuesday is a free robotics mini-camp for kids in nearby Silver City, Reciprocity Inc. will host a fundraiser at Rustically Divine, there's the Culinary Traveler’s Club's Polynesian Paradise featured at Bleu Café; the Carson City Classic Cinema Club will feature a Sci-Fi favorite at the BAC, plus fitness outings and more. Silver City, Nevada - An Engineering/Robotics Mini-Camp for kids ages 8-14 and their parents takes place on Tuesday, August 6 from 10am – noon at the Silver City School House (community center) at 385 High Street, Silver City, Nevada 89428. The free, annual event is led by the Society of Women Engineers and FIRST Nevada.

The Continuing Education program offered by Western Nevada College is offering a 5-day computer coding program designed for middle- and high-school students, ages 8-17.

Today, as I was doing a yoga class at Carson City Yoga, my thoughts drifted to the concept of “home.” There are dozens of clichés about home. Home is where the heart is. Home is where you make it. But how does one actively create a home?

For summer’s most visible meteor showers, join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory for some late night, educational fun. No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. Heading into Monday, July 29, 2019 and we're wondering how the month went by so quickly. Again we're looking at a fairly typical end of July day weather wise, with sunny skies and a high around 94. Continuing Education at Western Nevada College is offering a brand-new five-day coding boot camp program designed for middle and high school students from Monday, July 29 through Aug. 2. The course is offered in partnership with Alphalancers, LLC, a web design and development company based in Reno.

As we were leaving Casino Fandango, after watching “The Lion King,” my friend Cathy turns to me and says, “you should write your column about what happens when people get power hungry.” I laughed because I was already thinking about what she was suggesting. The Carson City Library is hiring to fill an open Digitorium Internship. Digitorium interns help manage the library's teen space and assist with program planning and implementation. The Digitorium Internship starts in August and runs through the 2019/2020 school year.

Carson City based RICE Hydro, Inc. continues its long tradition of supporting STEM education throughout North America. Recently, the company donated one of their MTP-15 Manual Hand Operated Hydrostatic test pumps to Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.

Law enforcement agencies statewide will be joining forces and focusing on distracted drivers from July 22 through August 4, 2019. The Nevada Highway Patrol will be working diligently to urge motorists to keep their eyes on the road and put away cell phones or other items that cause distractions.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce campus improvements at three schools including Pioneer High, Fremont Elementary and Mark Twain Elementary schools.

This 5 day program is designed for middle- and high-school students, ages 12-17. It will provide an introduction to coding, with a focus on HTML. Students will complete a coding project by the end of the week, and will receive a certificate of completion.

The Carson City Fair is returning for its third year this month, and it’s bringing big changes and several new events to its roster including a demolition derby, American Ninja Farmer contests, jello eating contests, animal auctions, and more.

This weekend, I was blessed to attend Gaia Gathering — an impactful gathering of healers from all walks of life. I was surrounded by many modalities of healing from a variety of cultures: artists, medicine men and women, yogis, energy healers, and spiritualists. As someone who heals companies and leaders through communication, I felt right at home. The messages rang through loud and clear and you will see many of my a-ha moments translated into my column here.

Registration is now open for the Sky Dome Planetarium coming to the Carson City Community Center gymnasium on Friday. The Mobile Ed Productions planetarium has been rescheduled after being canceled in June.

Heading into the Independence Day holiday weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to keep the next three days jam-packed with excitement.

Those are the last lines of the Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 2, 1776. The technology of the day – hand-writing in cursive – delayed the final copies until July 4.

The next Carson City School District School board meeting will be held Tuesday, July 9 in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

First item up for discussion will be the possibility of incurring a “bonded indebtedness” on behalf of the school district in an amount not to exceed $13 million.

I have been described as fiercely independent. For years, I have forged my own path — proudly so. I’d tap by feet along to anthems for independent women and cheer myself on. My independence became a badge of honor. And why shouldn’t it be? It was hard one. In some ways, I had to battle for it. But being solo also had a side effect, I struggled in asking for help. “I can do it” became a mantra for me. When I had a short fall, I would hide it instead of asking for support. In business, you see it happening as siloing.
