RSVP CEO to speak at Monday's Democratic luncheon

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Molly Walt, chief executive officer of the Nevada Rural Counties Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), where she is responsible for the overall strategic, fiscal, operational, government and community relations of the organization. She is committed and enthused to lead staff in accomplishing RSVP's mission of providing lifesaving volunteer programs that help seniors maintain their dignity, self-respect and independence.

WNC graphic design student honored to help design women’s suffrage specialty license plate

Western Nevada College graphic design student Maxine Thew won’t have to worry about her legacy as a young artist.

Starting this fall, her artwork is guaranteed to be seen every day in Nevada going forward and only the future knows when her art will no longer be visible. You see, her “everlasting” art will frequently appear on roads and freeways around the state.

“We did our free clinic at the Community Center, and what a turnout we had; around 100 participants showed up, we had a ton of fun, and we even had high school varsity players help coach the clinic as well” said Carson High School Varsity Basketball coach Jordan Glover.

Nevada Commission for Women and the Nevada Women’s Suffrage Celebration Committee formed to help facilitate collaboration among organizations in Nevada to celebrate and commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. As part of her Carson High School Senior Project graduation requirement, student, and committee member, Chloe Walt is working to educate Nevadans on the suffrage movement and the historic importance of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

Cab Calloway Orchestra, Feast of Chocolate, Artsy Fartsy jewelry show and more: Carson City region readies for weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

February 7, 2020 marks the 100th Anniversary of Nevada's Vote to Ratify the 19th Amendment, which allowed some (but not all) women to vote, but nonetheless began the process for voting equality.

Nevada Commission for Women unveils historic license plate honoring 100 years of women's suffrage

The Nevada Commission for Women unveiled a limited edition license plate celebrating women’s suffrage as a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote.

The plate itself is historic to Nevada, as it was the first assembly bill, Assembly Bill 499, to be backed by only women. Bills need a majority vote to pass any legislation, and this session was the first session any state in the country saw a legislature with a female-led majority.

Jo Etta Brown, executive vice president of the Alliance for Retired Americans and a senior member of the Nevada Commission for Women, will be the featured speaker at the Martin Luther King Day luncheon sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee of Carson City.

Ms. Brown's presentation will feature a review of Dr. King's legacy as an advocate for peace and social justice, the mostly forgotten story of Nevada as "the Mississippi of the West," and the little-known history of African Americans in Carson City and Carson Valley.

The Nevada Commission for Women is looking ahead to the 2019 Legislature

The Nevada Commission for Women was established in 1991, but due to a lack of governor appointed board members the group was dormant for nearly 20 years until Governor Brian Sandoval revived the commission and appointed 10 members in 2015.
