Social Networking for Seniors: Learn to Engage on Social Media

Carson City Library’s Technology Trainer Molly Walt will visit the Carson City Senior Center Friday, March 7, and bring with her a @ Two Digital Learning Center workshop on the use of social networking with an emphasis on popular networking sites Facebook and Pinterest; if time allows, Twitter will also be offered.

Stepped up traffic enforcement in Douglas, Lyon counties aims to target distracted drivers

Deputies of the Douglas County and Lyon County Sheriff’s Offices have increased traffic enforcement patrols on various highways and roadways within the two counties. The added patrol began Monday and runs through Feb. 22.

The increased patrols will specifically target distracted drivers, motorists using their cell phones and those speeding, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pat Brooks.

Carson City Sheriff's Office report details initial arrest that led to recovery of 60 stolen weapons

More details have emerged following the arrest Friday of a Dayton man that led to Carson City and Lyon County authorities to recover approximately 60 stolen weapons, a stolen vehicle and narcotics. Three others were also arrested.

Keith Furr, 52, was arrested on charges of being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, contempt of court and criminal contempt and is being held in Carson City with a bail of $23,500.

Lyon County gang unit, Carson City SET team arrest four, recover 60 stolen weapons

UPDATE: Carson City and Lyon County authorities arrested four people Friday on felony and misdemeanor charges related to stolen weapons, a vehicle and narcotics.

The Lyon County Gang Unit and Carson City SET Team had information in regards to a parole violator in the Lyon County area, who was in possession of stolen weapons. Both teams worked together to locate and apprehend the suspect, said Lt. Shawn Clanton.

Lyon County master plan vote draws legal fire from residents

At the Lyon County Commission meeting January 2, the commissioners voted 4-1 to grant a request from Comstock Mining Inc., to modify the county Master Plan and change the zoning, which would allow pit mining in and adjacent to Silver City.

Four of the Commissioners ignored the recommendation of the Planning Commission and the express wishes of the citizens of Silver City and voted without explanation to abandon precedent and acquiesce to the company's desires.

Assistant DA Mark Krueger to run for top Carson City District Attorney seat

Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger on Saturday announced his candidacy for Carson City District Attorney.

As Assistant District Attorney, Krueger has been second in command at the Carson City District Attorney’s Office since 2012 and leads a team of 22 professional and support staff.

“I have extensive experience working with city government and the criminal justice system,” he said. “Carson City needs an experienced prosecutor, civil litigator and team leader to fill the important role of District Attorney and I bring that to the table.”

Silver Springs Airport in Lyon County picked as drone test site

The Silver Springs Airport in Lyon County will be home to a Nevada drone company test site. The airport has been picked as a hub by Nevada Institute of Autonomous Systems as an operations location for unmanned autonomous vehicle systems, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page in a Friday statement.

The deal was made through a partnership with Lyon County and working closely with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Northern Nevada Development Authority, said Page.

The House Natural Resources Committee on Tuesday passed the Lyon County Economic Development and Conservation Act coupled with six other Nevada public lands bills out of the Committee sponsored by Representatives Mark Amodei (NV-2) and Steven Horsford (NV-4).

Nevada jobless figures fall to 8.8 percent in December, Carson City sees slight increase

While unemployment fell to 8.8 percent statewide in December, the lowest since November 2008, the jobless rate in Carson City climbed from 9.1 to 9.3 percent, according to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation figures released Monday.

Unemployment rates for the state’s metropolitan areas, including Carson City, are not adjusted for seasonality therefore the overall decrease in jobless figures are outside the main population cores. Reno's unemployment went from 8.2 to 8.4 percent, and Las Vegas, 8.6 to 8.9 percent.

Traffic stop by Carson City sheriff's SET deputy leads to felony drug arrest

A Carson City Jail inmate faces a felony charge battery of a prisoner in an incident Wednesday. Billy Harris, 67, was removed from a holding cell at around 8:30 a.m. after allegedly punching, spitting and hurling a racial slur at an inmate, according to the arrest report. Bail: $20,000.

Lyon County authorities say tip about murder in Dayton unfounded after investigation

Lyon County law officers say an investigation based on a tip alleging homicide at a Dayton home has been determined to be unfounded.

After nearly two weeks of investigation, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office Detective Division has concluded that the allegation of murder taking place at a residence in the 100 block of Railroad Street in Dayton hasn't generated any evidence or a victim or a crime, said Detective Lieutenant J. L. Pattison.

Carson City woman arrested after allegedly punching, biting her 15-year-old daughter

A 34-year-old man was arrested Jan. 14, 8:15 p.m. at 20 College Parkway and is being held without bail on a fugitive from justice warrant out of California, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Nicholas Schroeder also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana. According to the arrest report, officers responded on an anonymous tip that Schroeder was at a residence and had the warrant.

Carson City jail inmate faces felony battery charge after fight

A 67-year-old Carson City man in jail as an inmate faces a felony charge of battery after a fight on Tuesday with another inmate.

Billy Darrell Harris was arrested Jan. 7, 3:52 p.m. According to the report, jail officers separated two men, including Harris, from the fight and interviewed them both after reading them their Miranda rights.

Lyon commissioners OK Comstock Mining master plan amendment, zone change

In a 4 to 1 decision the Lyon County Board of Commissioners on Thursday approved a Master Plan Amendment and zone change sought by Comstock Mining.

Commissioners took testimony 4.5 hours of testimony in regards to Comstock Mining’s application for a Master Plan Amendment and Zone Change. The chambers and hallways filled with about 250 residents.

Man caught shoplifting at Carson City supermarket arrested on felony stolen vehicle warrant

A Dayton man was arrested Thursday on a felony possession of stolen property warrant Thursday. Joshua Lee Irvine, 34, is being held in the Carson City Jail on $40,237 bail.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to a grocery store in the 1800 block of North Carson Street at 3:06 p.m. on a larceny report and a man being uncooperatives. Store employees stated the man put a two-pack of Flex lights, valued at $2.99, into a bag and walked out of the store without paying.

Smith Valley woman faces 20 years after Lyon jury finds her guilty of felony child abuse

A Smith Valley woman has been convicted of child abuse causing substantial bodily harm, according to the Lyon County District Attorney’s Office.

Ashlee Marie Kinsey, 24, formerly known as Ashlee Marie Morrow, had been charged with two counts of child abuse. After a four-day trial, a jury found her guilty on Dec. 13 of abusing a young boy by cutting his foot with a boxcutter as a form of punishment. She is scheduled to be sentenced in District Court in Yerington on Feb. 3. She faces up to 20 years in prison.
