Tasters go for the bold and zesty during first day of Carson City chili cook-off

Lots of shady trees, a nice gentle breeze and plenty of ice cold beer were enough to keep the heat down a notch Saturday at the High Sierra Regional Chili Cook-Off and Craft Fair in Carson City.

The two-day event at Glen Eagles Restaurant, which continues through Sunday, has brought dozens of the best chili cookers from around the region hoping for a chance to win prize money, bragging rights and a trip to Las Vegas for the World Chili Cook-off Championship. The public is invited to Sunday's event and sampling costs next to nothing, organizers said.

Get it while it's hot this Saturday and Sunday in Carson City. The Honor Flight Nevada program and Glen Eagles will host the High Sierra Regional Chili Cook-Off and Craft Fair this weekend.

International Chili Society chefs will compete for a chance to go to the World Cook-Off in Las Vegas. The public is invited to sample red and verde chili as well as salsas. Tasting kits are $3 each.
The "People's Choice" Chili award will be determined by the vote collected by everyone who samples.

Teams participate in adventure trek to benefit Nevada Outdoorsmen in Wheelchairs

Three hunting TV personalities with local ties will help a Northern Nevada outdoorsman store raise money for the nonprofit group Nevada Outdoorsmen in Wheelchairs with an adventure trek covering about 54 miles in a friendly competition.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s monthly dance party will be the Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop, 6-10 pm July 26 at the Carson Nugget’s Grand Ballroom, 507 N. Carson St. Vintage 1950s-‘60s dance music will be played, and costumes of that era are encouraged. The fun includes dance, hula hoop, costume and limbo contests and door prizes. Cost is $5 for car show participants, $7 for members of HSSDC and Reno’s Biggest Little Swing Dance Club, $10 general for individuals and $15 for couples.

Carson City Leadership Institute graduates class of 2014 tonight

Today is the official graduation ceremony of the Carson City Leadership Institute Class of 2014. They’ve spent 8 months of intensive study learning about Carson City and have made new friends and business acquaintances.

Friday night at the Chamber’s annual meeting, which is sold out, the class will unveil its unique and historic class project that has the souls of some very historic figures, including our founder Abram Curry, dancing on their graves.

Best Taste winner Sassafras looking for a new home

Winning Best Taste for this year's Taste of Downtown is bittersweet for the owners of Sassafras, as their landlord has given them until the end of July to vacate that space.

"We are devastated, shocked, heartbroken," said Scott Doerr, who owns the business with partner and chef Tony Fish.

Doerr said they were presented with a termination of tenancy on June 16 by Double Eagle Cubed LLC, the entity that purchased the building from Magpie Properties, LLC last year.

Bike to Work Week Party 2014

I hope everyone’s Bike to Work Week is going well. You really couldn’t ask for better weather here in Carson City for encouraging people to get out on their bikes. Last night we had 94 adults and 29 children signed in for our Westside Cruiser ride, and the miles and trips are really starting to rack up for the Bicycle Commuter Corporate Challenge. To say thank you for all your hard work, we’re going to throw you a street party!

Carson City's High Sierra Brewery to open taproom, brewery at Baldini's in Sparks

High Sierra Brewing is coming to Baldini’s Casino this summer. The Sparks gaming property and the Carson City-based brewer today announced a partnership that will result in a brewery and taproom opening at Baldini’s by late August.

Popular Carson City High Sierra Brewing Company faces closure

Without substantial financial assistance, an award-winning Carson City microbrewery is scheduled to close by the end of March.
The High Sierra Brewing Company announced Wednesday that, barring a last minute partnership or investment, it would be closing its doors on March 29.

High Sierra Brewing Co. will leave downtown near the end of March and enter the history books unless an investor turns up, the owner-operator said Wednesday.

The Rotary Club of Carson City's hit event the Beer and Pizza Championships, returns again this year so help us crown the King (or Queen) of all brews and pizza in the greater Carson City area.

The event at the Carson Mall begins at 5:30 p.m. and will feature a live and silent auction, raffle for wheelbarrow full of wine, and a drawing for a 4-Day Samuel Adams Boston trip for two!

The event is presented by the Rotary Club of Carson City and High Sierra Brewing Co and benefits local scholarships and charities. Ticket includes all you can drink beer and all you can eat pizza.

School of Medicine, education center release Nevada 2014-2015 health care career manual

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada School of Medicine and the High Sierra Area Health Education Center announce the release of Health Care Careers in Nevada 2014-2015.

This updated edition of the manual contains a wide range of current information on more than 80 health care occupations in Nevada, including an overview of job requirements, Nevada employment outlook and average salary data in Nevada for each occupation. The guide also provides a detailed inventory of educational certificate and degree programs in Nevada for each type of health care job.

Battle of the Bars this Sunday in Carson City collects toys for Salvation Army

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Christmas program will benefit from the first annual Battle of the Bars Toy Drive. Carson City area bars and taverns have been collecting toys since late November and will push for a final count this Sunday, Dec. 15, 6 p.m.

The Salvation Army officials will be “Bar Hopping” this Sunday afternoon and evening picking up toys and thanking everyone for their support of this Toy Drive.

Obituary: Lynn Palma Barbagallo Phalan

Lynn Palma Barbagallo Phalan, 71 years old, wife of James Phalan, died Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in Carson City, Nev.

Lynn was born Sept. 28, 1942 in Pittsburg, Calif. Among her survivors are her husband James Michael Phalan, her brother William (Lisa) Barbagallo, sister Noreen Byrd, daughter Michelle (Tim) Cleveland, sons Jeff Phalan, and Jim (Gabriela); step children Dave (Debbie) Phalan, Janine Phalan, and Greg (Dora) Phalan, grandchildren Nathan and Ashley Edwards, Zoey Cleveland, Emily Lawrence, Sofia, Jimmy, Jamie, Sara, Holly and Tierra Phalan.

High Sierra Brewing Co. wins gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival

High Sierra Brewing Co., in Carson City took home a gold medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival competition held recently in Denver.

Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest national beer competition that recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The top three winners in the competition’s 84 beer-style categories were announced Oct. 12 at the Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colo.

HopeFest outdoor concert Friday in Downtown Carson City to benefit local cancer patients

The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation announces HopeFest 2013, an outdoor concert offering free admission with all sales on food, drinks and raffle tickets directly benefitting local cancer patients.

The outdoor event featuring the band Notch 8 takes place on Friday, October 4 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. outside of the Firkin & Fox restaurant on Third Street in Carson City. The event was rescheduled due to hazardous air conditions caused by the California Rim Fire.
