Agencies continue prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe

UPDATE: The smoke that has settled into Carson City this Tuesday evening is from prescribed burning taking place around the Lake Tahoe Basin, confirmed Carson City Fire Chief Bob Schreihans.

The North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations this week in several areas around Lake Tahoe.

Weather and conditions permitting, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations next week in areas on the South and East shores of Lake Tahoe. If conditions are favorable, operations may begin on Sunday, Nov. 6 and may continue through the week.

Wisconsin woman dies in ski accident at Lake Tahoe resort

A 77-year-old Wisconsin woman died Tuesday morning in a ski accident at Heavenly Mountain Resort, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Kathryn Strangman of Madison died of injuries after ski patrol had attempted CPR at Heavenly's Boulder Lodge on the Nevada side. She had struck a tree while skiing, said DCSO Sgt. Pat Brooks. The sheriff's office was contacted at 11:44 a.m. Tuesday.

An autopsy is scheduled and the accident is under investigation.

Ski with a Forest Service ranger program begins at Heavenly resort

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites residents to Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. Tours are held every Monday and Friday beginning at 1 p.m., last approximately one-hour and continue through April 1, 2016, weather permitting.

Search and Rescue finds Tahoe skier who went missing, citation given

A South Lake Tahoe man was issued a citation Saturday for skiing out of bounds at Heavenly Mountain Resort after a search and rescue was deployed when he was reported missing.

The man was found safe and not hurt at 8:52 p.m. Saturday after he was reported missing late that afternoon, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office late that afternoon, said Sgt. Pat Brooks.

Lake Tahoe area ski resorts look for winter employees; to host job fairs Nov. 6-7

Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort are accepting applications and will host job fairs in November.

The Lake Tahoe resorts, under parent company Vail Resorts, says it will, for the first time, hire teens 15 and over who wish to work on the mountain. Teens can apply for jobs such as cashiers, ski and snowboard school teachers’ assistants, guest services representatives, parking attendants, cleaning attendants, ticket sales and scanning.

2016 Amgen Tour of California returns to Lake Tahoe for men, women stage races

Amgen Tour of California, presented by AEG, announced Thursday that professional cyclists return to Lake Tahoe for the men’s Stage 5 finish, as well as the women’s Stage 1 start on Thursday, May 19, 2016. The men will take off in Lodi, Calif. and finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. The women will also start/finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort on May 19.

Smokey visits Heavenly to raise wildfire awareness

A famous bear visited Heavenly Mountain Resort Tuesday to raise awareness about fire danger in Lake Tahoe. Thanks to Heavenly Mountain Resort for helping out Smokey Bear by banning all smoking on the mountain.
Here, Smokey uses the telescope at the Gondola mid-station to check out the work the Forest Service and its partners have done to reduce hazardous forest fuels and protect Lake Tahoe communities from severe wildfire.

Heavenly Epic Discovery plan at Tahoe gets final OK, construction to begin this summer

The final hurdle in a process that began in 2013 was cleared Thursday for Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe with final approval by the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board for the Epic Discovery Project, a year-round outdoor recreation plan to straddle the resort's Nevada and California border.

Heavenly Mountain Resort has sought approval for expansions to its on-mountain summer activities, as part of Vail Resorts’ Epic Discovery program. The Epic Discovery plan was submitted in July 2013 and has undergone a comprehensive environmental and public review.

Forest Service targets invasive plants at Lake Tahoe with herbicide treatments

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will continue a project to eradicate, control, and contain known infestations of invasive plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin using chemical treatment. Work will occur at approximately 70 infestation sites beginning May 15 and continuing through September 2015.
